Big Tech giant Google has reportedly threatened to fire any employees who do not comply with the company’s anti-freedom COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
CNBC cited Google official documents to say that Google can reduce the pay and leave unvaccinated workers. CNBC reports that employees who are denied religious or medical exemptions or do not apply for exemptions must have the vaccine by Jan. 18. If not, employees will reportedly have 30 days of “paid administrative leave” and six months of “unpaid administrative leave” before being fired. A Google spokesperson touted the rule as “one of the most important ways we can keep our workforce safe and keep our services running,” as Google looks to require several days a week of in-office work next year, reported CNBC.
CNBC reports that Google is basing its decision on the Biden administration order that requires all businesses with more than 100 employees to obtain vaccinated and agree to COVID-19 tests. The order was put on hold by a federal court, which means that Jan. 18 has been extended. CNBC reports that Google will require its 150,000+ employees to show proof of COVID-19 vaccine, regardless of where they are working. This applies even if the job has anything to do with indirect federal contracts. Interestingly, although Biden’s restrictive executive order would allow the possibility of regular testing as an alternative to vaccination, Google reportedly said that “frequent testing is not a valid alternative to vaccination.” What happened to bodily autonomy and the legal right to make personal medical choices?
Google has provided a potential exception to the vaccine mandate for those whose jobs “fall outside the scope of the executive order” and can be fully virtual, CNBC wrote. Hundreds of Google employees have reportedly already signed a “manifesto” protesting the company’s vaccination requirement.
CNBC reported that Google employees will be able to claim benefits during the first 92-days of unpaid time off if they do not choose to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. Google will consider religious or medical exemption requests on an individual basis.
