Newspaper Won’t Use the Term ‘Dr. Oz’ in His Senate Race, But Dr. Jill Biden? That Sneaks In

The TV star Dr. Mehmet Oz is running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania in a competitive Republican field. He’s using the first controversy to help his campaign. Philadelphia Inquirer They insist that they won’t be calling him Dr. Oz, even though he is a doctor and professor in surgery.

It’s kinda funny because many newspapers rush to honour “Dr. Jill Biden”, who is a doctor but has a Ph.D.

Jeffrey Barg was the Inquirer’s “Grammarian”. He wrote an article entitled “Two small letters that can skew Pennsylvania Senate race.” The advantage of using the “Dr.” is in large numbers of candidates.

After Oz declared his candidacy for the presidency, TheGet in touch’s front-page headline, photo caption, and first sentence all referred to Dr. Oz. That goes against the paper’s style guide, which reads: “Do not use Dr. on first reference for anyone with the title, whether they are a medical doctor or have a doctorate in a nonmedical field, to avoid complaints of unequal treatment from individuals who worked hard to achieve doctorates in nonmedical fields.” It specifies just two exceptions: obituaries, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
