It’s 2021. Time for some cultural discussion on the NewsBusters Radio Podcast. NPR music critic Ann Powers recently suggested the Beatles signified how the rock band was a white-male institution. NPR also recently brought on Nikole Hannah-Jones to explain that “yacht rock” like Steely Dan, Toto, and the Doobie Brothers is culturally appropriated black music.
Hannah-Jones was told by NPR that the bands “rely heavily on Black musical forms, and how it has been happening for centuries.” When the Doobie Brothers play on her radio, they asked how she felt. She laughed and replied that she wouldn’t listen if a station played the Doobie Brothers. Who is channeling musical segregation here? You can’t accuse any black liberal on NPR of racism. Only a black conservative.
This taxpayer-funded radio station wants whites to continue to confess their “white privilege” Listeners to NPR are likely to admit their white privilege. Americans have grown tired of the notion that listening to classical rock can somehow contribute to segregation.
