It should not surprise anyone that new data has shown that almost no one trusts the media any longer.
Gallup’s recent poll shows that Americans are less trusting of American institutions than they were in the past.
Americans feel less secure in the major U.S. institutions today than they did a year ago. There have been significant drops for 11 out of 16 institutions and none improvements. The largest declines in confidence are 11 percentage points for the Supreme Court — as reported in late June before the court issued controversial rulings on gun laws and abortion — and 15 points for the presidency, matching the 15-point drop in President Joe Biden’s job approval rating since the last confidence survey in June 2021.
However, the media ranks second in America as the least trusted institution. Congress is the only American institution that has less trust.
Axios has this information. It is most likely even more telling.
The numbers are: The trust fall in the news media been driven mostly by Republicans, according to the data.
- Just 5% of Republicans said they had “a great deal or quite a lot of confidence” in newspapers, compared to 35% of Democrats.
- Only 8% of Republicans said they had “a great deal or quite a lot of confidence” in TV news, compared to 20% of Democrats.
- Independents’ views are generally closer to Republicans’.
Here’s the big picture Media trust gaps between Republicans and Democrats grew during Obama’s and Bush’s administrations. But, it widened dramatically under Trump and is still growing.
Why is it that Republican voters trust media less than Democrats, I ask you? What could be the cause?
Is it possible that Democrats get routinely covered in the media? They sought to discredit the Hunter Biden Story in 2020. He had several anti-Trump stories retract over his presidency. They continue to label anyone who votes for Trump far-right extremists.
Perhaps it was because CNN and other supposedly objective media outlets focused more on preaching than reporting. This is why Americans found Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo to be so offended.
CNN employees currently are very unhappy with current ratings. According to Levon Satamian (RedState), they are not blaming anyone but themselves. The Zucker era is responsible for the continued decline in ratings. The restructuring is still underway, and it’s going to be a while before they recover. CNN staffers are not happy with these changes. They were the ones who drove viewers away.
Gallup Poll’s best-known tidbit is: From 2005 to 2008, there was the largest drop in trust with the media. independents. These voters increased their trust in newspapers by 19% to 12% in 2021. Television news trust fell from 13 percent to 8% (interestingly the Republican trust in TV news increased by 2%)
Most major media outlets show a tendency to lean left. If independents are fleeing from the media in droves, as it appears they are, then that’s actually another bad electoral sign for the Democrats come November. Bad enough their politicians are chasing away independents and Hispanic voters, but now even the media can’t effectively run interference anymore.
