NBC’s Todd: Biden Like Rodney Dangerfield, He Can’t Get Any Respect

On Sunday’s Meet the Press, anchor Chuck Todd did his latest installment of “poor Joe Biden” where Todd whines about how poorly or unfairly Biden is being treated by the American people or the media. Todd thinks Biden has been abused by his own party.

Turning to panelist and former Obama administration Homeland Security secretary Jeh Johnson, Todd cried about how “Joe Biden is really upset, he feels he’s being disrespected.”

Todd pouted that Biden “feels as if the party has never really—there is a little bit of Rodney Dangerfield in him. They’ve never really given me respect, they did not want me to run in ’15 and look at what happened in ‘16 and they didn’t want me to run in ’20 and look what happened, I actually won. Now they don’t want me to run in ’24.” After that temper tantrum, Todd asked “does he have a point?”

Johnson responded “in a sense, yes.” He admitted that he doesn’t “know that Joe Biden has definitively made up his mind to run in 2024.” But added his “advice would be unconventional. Make it known that you won’t be running sooner than expected. Even before the midterms.”

He reasoned that “it gives others the opportunity to prepare and to get organized for 2024.”

Turning to NBC capitol hill correspondent Ali Vitali, Todd asked “where is most of this hand wringing about Biden coming from?” Adding that “I don’t sense it coming from congress, I sense it comes from governors and maybe those who want to run for President.”

Vitali replied that “there is some consternation around the idea that Biden came in saying he would restore institutional norms” adding “there is this feeling like you promised me it would be normal and this doesn’t feel like a normal that I want to accept so certainly we are post normal in whatever sense that that means.”

CHUCK TODD says: Okay, now let’s move to Joe Biden. Jeh, you will get a first look. Joe Biden feels disrespected and is very upset. He feels as if the party has never really—there is a little bit of Rodney Dangerfield in him. They’ve never really given me respect, they did not want me to run in ’15 and look at what happened in ‘16 and they didn’t want me to run in ’20 and look what happened, I actually won. Is he right?

JEH JOHNSON It is true that I know some of this, but it’s instinct. Joe Biden may have made a decision to run in 2020, but I’m not sure. It’s likely that he will have the conversation with his family at one point. It would not be conventional advice.

Make sure you announce your intention to run as soon as possible if you’re not. You can still run even before the midterms.

TODD: It opens the floodgates that’s for sure.

JOHNSON: It gives others the opportunity to prepare and to get organized for 2024 do the opposite of what Donald Trump’s going to do, which is to keep us all in suspense until the last minute.

TODD: Ali! Where is all the hand-wringing over Biden? I don’t sense it coming from congress, I sense it comes from governors and maybe  those who want to run for President.

ALI VITALI – But it’d, wouldn’t? There is some confusion around the notion that Biden said he would reinstate institutional norms. Maybe it is because of the Jan 6 hearings or because it looks like the economy is going to be normal. This doesn’t feel normal enough for me to believe that we have become post-normal in any sense.
