News networks continue to cover the story of Bishop E. Evans, Arlington Texas. The Army National Guardsman, who was attempting to rescue two drowning migrants from the Rio Grande River, died in the act. The story was finally reported by NBC on Tuesday evening, although it only lasted 12 seconds. CBS STILL hasn’t discussed his sacrifice.
You can find the NBC Nightly NewsMorgan Chesky, a reporter covering the Republican delegation that visited the border to witness the crisis, was interviewed by him. During that segment, he managed to note this: “The group also honored Specialist Bishop Evans, a National Guardsman whose body was recovered today in the Rio Grande. Authorities say he disappeared in a fast current Friday, trying to save two drowning migrants.”
That 12 seconds was all of NBC’s coverage so far on Evans — and again, this young man went missing on Friday.
ABC’s Good Morning AmericaOn Saturday, the soldiers were only allowed to be on duty for 20 seconds. Here’s reporter Whit Johnson:
Now, we are searching for the Texas Army National Guard member. He was patrolling the Rio Grande on Friday when he disappeared. This was part of the state’s crackdown against illegal immigration, drug smuggling. The soldier is said to have jumped in the river as a rescue attempt for a refugee crossing the border into the United States. Witnesses claim that he never returned.
The 12 seconds and 20 seconds of NBC, as well as the 20 seconds from ABC, are still better than — at this point — the 0 seconds CBS. And this is the same CBS that, last Thursday, CBS mocked Texas and the state’s National Guard troops for an “expensive political stunt” to secure the border.
Back in September of 2021, the networks jumped on the now-debunked story that Border Patrol agents “whipped” migrants crossing the border. These networks ignored legal clearance of the individuals. It also seems that network journalists don’t want to cover heroic members of our military who risk their lives to save migrants.
