NATO Sends Patriot Air Defense Missiles to Poland and Slovakia – Opinion

There are growing signs that NATO fears that Vladimir Putin’s criminal invasion of a non-threatening neighbor is on the verge of spilling over into the territory of NATO member states.

The United States declared Tuesday that it would send two Patriot air defence batteries to Poland. A Patriot battery is the basic unit of organization for the weapon system (or any Army artillery system for that matter), and it consists of a phased array radar, an engagement control station, computers, power generating equipment, and up to eight launchers, each of which holds four ready-to-fire missiles.

“This defensive deployment is being conducted proactively to counter any potential threat to U.S. and Allied forces and NATO territory,” U.S. European Command said in a statement.

Poland’s support has been crucial to both Ukrainians fleeing their country and the defense of the nation after Russia invaded it 13 days ago. Poland is a NATO member and EU member and hosts more than a million Ukrainian refugees. It has also become an important staging ground for weapons entering the country.

Poland is bordering Ukraine and Belarus, and it has been open about its intentions to let everyone know. Unlike many in safer locations, Poland is well aware of the dangers of having a rapacious neighbor unconstrained by the law of nations or basic humanity, and it understands the threat it faces should Putin succeed in absorbing Ukraine or turning it into a “neutral” puppet state. Quite honestly, Poland probably needs to feel like someone in Washington gives a rat’s ass about its security given the utter debacle that the proposed transfer of MiG-29s to Ukraine turned out to be (Biden Junta Duplicity Revealed After Poland Declares MiGs for Ukraine Are Ready to Go).

It is evident that the US deployment was more than just a temporary measure to calm the nerves in the Poles. Germany and Slovakia both announced plans for Patriot missiles being moved to Slovakia. Slovakia is a country that borders Ukraine like Poland and openly talks about arming its military. Slovakia is also a part of the abortive MiG contract.

It is becoming increasingly hard to understand how Putin allows the West to provide arms for Ukraine as the Russian army gets beaten and embarrassed in Ukraine. Accepting it would be the worst thing for him (just like how the US has allowed Russia to arm proxies who have murdered young Americans since 1950). You could argue that penalizing NATO for running up the cost of the Ukrainian venture may be an existential matter to the KGB thug from the Kremlin. NATO seems to be anticipating a Russian missile strike against either one of these countries.
