On Sunday night, MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin touted an Associated Press story titled “Social programs weak in many states with tough abortion laws.” AP illustrated it with a big picture of a sign that reads “Abortion Access Saves Women’s Lives.”
The following was announced by Jasen Lo, Camille Fassett and Lindsay Whitehurst:
States with some of the nation’s strictest abortion laws are also some of the hardest places to have and raise a healthy child, especially for the poor, according to an analysis of federal data by The Associated Press.
This raises questions about the health of the social safety net. States are expected to ban or further limit abortion access after a U.S. Supreme Court decision in the latter part of this year. People with lower incomes will be most affected, since they are not able or able seek abortion in other states.
Mohyeldin displayed the headline and declared:
MOHYELDIN: Red states aren’t prepared for a post-Roebaby boom. If the Supreme Court decides to overturn Roe v. Wade. Already, the red states that plan to restrict or ban abortions have limited access and poor outcomes. There are also fewer safety nets available for both mothers and their children. Families in states with strained and already fragile systems will be left in difficult circumstances by the resulting increase in births.
The MSNBC host then brought on Dr. Bhavik Kumar, an abortionist with Planned Parenthood Center for Choice, in Houston. Doctor, we are so grateful that you took the time to visit us. How has the experience of an abortion provider been in light of Republican-backed legislation which virtually banned access to abortion in your state?
The abortionist replied: “This is certainly not something that’s new for us in Texas, it’s been probably a decade or more, where Republican elected officials have been passing abortion restriction after abortion restriction – and it’s become more extreme with time, and certainly, we’re in the most extreme place we’ve been, ever.”
Ever? Texas had been a state that outlawed abortion until 2006. Roe Vs. Wade All 50 States were subjected to the 1973 reorganization.
Spinning off the AP story, Mohyeldin asked the doctor “How concerned are you about red states like Texas, not having the infrastructure to support the requirements or health requirements of a baby boom if Roe V. Wade is overturned?”
Dr. Kumar said that abortion bans were fatal for women. “When they don’t have access to abortion care, they don’t have access to health care that they need, and we also know the health care access industry, you know, as far as insurance access, they need to find a primary care doctor to have the things that they need before they become pregnant, while they’re pregnant, and then also after, in not in place, they will suffer. Unfortunately, some will also die. But politicians are “pushing abortion bans at the cost of people’s lives.” It doesn’t appear that they think unborn babies are “peoples’ lives.”
