MRC Launches Broad Effort to Address Congressional Censorship

The Media Research Center today launched a new initiative to stop Big Tech’s election interference. The MRC addressed a request to the congressional staff for a detailed report about lawmakers censored and blocked by Big Tech.

MRC Free Speech America discovered that in October, social media companies censored GOP legislators at a rate 56-1 compared to congressional Democrats.

Big Tech has censored 18 congressional members from July 17, 2020 to Jan. 3, 2022. CensorTrack records the most recent cases of congressional censorship. CensorTrack data shows that 17 Republicans and 1 Democrat were censored by social media sites.

Instances of censorship included YouTube’s removal of a video of a panel on vaccine mandates and injuries posted by Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI); Twitter’s censorship of Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) for “misgendering” Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Rachel Levine; and, YouTube’s censorship of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) after he posted a video protesting the platform’s suppression of alternative COVID-19 perspectives.

“It’s time to stop Big Tech from interfering in our elections!” MRC Founder and President Brent Bozell tweeted Jan. 19. “Starting today, we are launching a comprehensive effort to address the censorship of members of Congress, their key staff and campaigns. If you’ve been censored, tell us at CensorTrack.org.”

This is the letter from MRC to Congress offices.

Dear Senior Staffer

The Media Research Center is currently conducting a thorough analysis of the impact of social media on Congressmen, staffs, and campaigns. We need your support to make Big Tech more accountable for our democracy and stop them from putting their interests above the welfare of your representative and your voters. Help us with the Free Speech America Congress Project.

The MRC’s Free Speech America division is launching the project in conjunction with our CensorTrack.org effort to quantify Big Tech censorship for all of Congress. We want all instances of Big Tech censorship to be tracked, regardless of whether your representative is a Democrat or Republican.

Here’s what we are looking for:

  • Send us screenshots to censor@mrc.org if you or any other congressperson have been subject to Big Tech censorship online

               ○ Official campaign account
               ○ Official government account
               ○ Chief of staff
               ○ Press secretary
               ○ Spokesperson

  • Be sure that you take advantage of the platform’s appeal process immediately. Let us know if you have any questions.
  • Some of the Big Tech Platforms that are guilty may not be limited to:

              ○ Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok
              ○ The Google or Apple app stores
              ○ Content sites like Substack, MailChimp or Medium
              ○ Web hosting services such as Amazon Web Services or BlueHost
              ○ Financial websites like Square, GoFundMe, PayPal, Patreon and individual banks
              ○ Event hosting sites such as Eventbrite.

Our CensorTrack.org database will keep track of every incident and we will publish reports. We will also be able share with you links on Twitter that link to all the information we have published about your incident.

Your time and consideration are greatly appreciated. Please let us know if we can help, and please let us know if you’ve been censored. Big Tech cannot suppress free speech online.

Thank you for your support.
