Although the LAPD didn’t release any details about Bridges, they noted that he was freed on $130,000 bail. His court appearance is set for July 20. According to the Charlotte Hornets, they made statements confirming that they were aware of the terrible incident.
“The Charlotte Hornets are aware of the situation involving Miles Bridges … We are in the process of gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Bridges was supposed to sign a max contract after free agency closed. His 24-year-old score record may have hampered that possibility. Bridges’s acceptance of the max contract would set a poor precedent for sports in that someone can commit domestic violence and still be given credit due to their performance on the court.
“As an organization, we love Miles,” Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak said Tuesday. “We are going to bring him back. He has been great for the franchise, and I believe, with his work ethic, he’s only going to get better.”
Kupchak made the statement shortly before Bridges’ arrest; it remains to be seen if Bridges will be resigned by the Hornets. It is worth noting that Bridges changed his Twitter bio from “forward for the Charlotte Hornets” to “It’s me.”
If the Hornets or any NBA team signs Bridges to a max deal, not only will that set a bad precedent in the NBA, it will give the “OK” for athletes to think they are untouchable. Just like we saw in the NFL when then-Kansas City Chiefs, now-Miami Dolphins wide-receiver Tyreek Hill committed domestic violence — beating and choking his girlfriend in college — but he never saw any jail time, and he was investigated for child abuse as well. Although he’s still with the NFL and is praised for his playing, most of his non-sports actions are ignored.
Today marks the beginning of NBA free agency. Although it is not clear when Bridges will be signing with a team or which team will pay him the most, he may have signed with the team that offers the best money. The NBA’s owners and teams should show that domestic violence shouldn’t be encouraged.
