Leftists Demand Pulitzer Prizes Require Taking a Diversity Survey

Liberal media outlets praise the organization’s “Diversity Equity & Inclusion,” but it appears that “diversity in racial hiring” is more difficult than they claim. The Left-leaning media groups are demanding the Pulitzer Prize organisation requires that all newsrooms take part in the News Leader Association’s diversity survey annually by 2024 to be eligible to receive the Pulitzers.

Sarah Scire at the Nieman Lab reports a new open letter cites reporting in Nieman Lab that though NLA sought responses from 2,500 news organizations for this year’s survey, but just 303 newsrooms responded.

Numerous professional journalism groups, non-profits and labor unions signed the letter. The signees include professional minority lobbies like the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and the Native American Journalists Association. This included Vox Media, Vox Media, Center for Investigative Reporting, Vox Media, and the Center for Public Integrity.

The hiring of conservatives is not required for “diversity,” as newsrooms are expected to be. While the Left wants to reduce bias in hiring of minorities, it is often adding bias through its hiring practices that include leftist editors and reporters. The Left would regard them as White if they employed a conservative minority.

The letter ends with:

Journalists are expected to demonstrate transparency and accountability. By making sure that newsrooms reflect our readers’ demographics, we must answer to them and their workers. To ensure that our newsrooms can function at their best, we need to be honest with the data.

Open letter was sent Friday morning by Sisi Wei, co-executive director of OpenNews, and Jon SchleussPresident of The NewsGuild. Someone is not feeling the Spirit of George Floyd!

“The most incredible feedback we got was that other groups had thought of this idea as well, and they were excited that someone was finally taking action,” Wei said. “While we came upon the idea to start with the Pulitzers, so have many others….

“There’s been overwhelming support for this, which has been so inspiring. Newsrooms were supposed to have a ‘reckoning’ after the murder of George Floyd, and yet, here we are in 2022 seeing that so few organizations want to even be transparent about their own newsroom diversity,” Wei said. “This small step would be a big push towards helping our newsrooms serve the communities they cover.”

The activists still need signatures to sign the letter, and they will be releasing a second edition soon.
