According to reports in The New York Times Kamala Harris appears to be complaining about how the media treats her because she is black and her gender is unfair.
She’s been telling her supporters that she thinks the coverage of her would be better if she were any of her predecessors, “all of whom were white and male,” the Times notes. “She also has confided in them about the difficulties she is facing with the intractable issues in her portfolio, such as voting rights and the root causes of migration.”
It is shocking that she pulled out her sex and race card. How about the problem is that she doesn’t seem all that interested in addressing the primary job with which she has been identified — dealing with the issues of illegal immigration at the border?
There’s no doubt that the border can be a tough issue, particularly when the Biden policies have only made things worse. Biden assigned her that, so one might ask what he was thinking when he gave her an assignment that could only hurt her — since he’s not going to correct the bad policies. But the bottom line is that she hasn’t seemed all that engaged in the effort and that’s all on her.
As the Times story even notes, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), a moderate who has been very upset about the problems at the border, said his experiences with Harris’ office have been disappointing. Cuellar was willing to speak with her during her short layover in his state and offer to help her. He had his staff contact her office in June to provide advice and help when he learned she was going to the border. He never returned the call.
“I say this very respectfully to her: I moved on,” Mr. Cuellar said. “She was tasked with that job, it doesn’t look like she’s very interested in this, so we are going to move on to other folks that work on this issue.”
This was similar to what the Guatemalan president said about Harris — that she visited and then he didn’t hear from her again.
We could also take issue with the claim that somehow she’s getting treated more unfairly than her predecessors like Mike Pence or Dan Quayle. She’s a Democrat, which means that she still largely gets a pass for her failures in her job. Meanwhile, Quayle was permanently shamed by the liberal media for a momentary comment about spelling “potato.” Pence was demonized as a religious zealot and mocked for wanting to be faithful to his wife. Both were either white or male and neither one of them was given a pass by the media.
Guess who Kamala is contacting for assistance and advice in the meantime? None other than the original person who can’t accept her loss and that people don’t like her — Hillary Clinton. Not the most ideal person to talk to. Clinton’s advice to her:
“There is a double standard; it’s sadly alive and well,” Clinton said. “A lot of what is being used to judge her, just like it was to judge me, or the women who ran in 2020, or everybody else, is really colored by that.”
Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), the former chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, showed that there’s still friction with the White House over how Harris is viewed. “What the White House could’ve done is been clearer with the expectations of what was supposed to happen under her watch,” she said.
Harris is free to find reasons. She is responsible for Harris’ low approval ratings, and she also has to thank the person who hired her.
