Following a deadly mass shooting in Uvalde, TX, the outcry from the left to “do something” about gun violence flooded the airwaves. A certain group of Republicans, despite not having any evidence of Democratic-pushed policies being effective, rushed to accept the blame.
John Cornyn (Republican from Texas) was the one in doubt. Cornyn became the principal negotiator of a new gun-control bill. Even though the legislative framework has been released, it was blocked by Democrats who demanded that more be offered. Still, Cornyn has signed onto a series of policies that appear to have the votes to pass, including federal funding for “red flag” laws, easily the most objectionable part of the bill.
On Friday, Cornyn appeared at the Texas Republican Party’s yearly convention, and he got set on fire by the audience.

It is almost impossible not to admire the handful of people who stood up to clap in the midst of the boos. It makes it all seem even more ridiculous. Cornyn, for his part seemed to be able to ignore the crowd as he tried to deliver his speech to the hostile audience.
But while some might suggest that the audience was being too hard on the Texas senator, I’d suggest that Cornyn, whatever one may think of him as a person, simply doesn’t realize what time it is. The GOP is on its way to one of the biggest electoral victories in many decades. It’s not 2018. Joe Biden’s average approval rating is in the high-30s. In the middle all this chaos, Democrats seem to be taking care of themselves.
So ask yourself why Cornyn and the rest of the GOP surrender caucus think now is a good time to hand leverage to the left and compromise on one of the right’s most important issues? Did CNN say some harsh things about them? Oder were those editorials by The Washington Post to blame?
Simply put, there is nothing that could stop the forthcoming Republican win in November. Current GOP politicians like Cornyn and Lindsey Graham or Mitch McConnell would do anything to destroy their base before the election. For the life of me, I can’t understand what the incentive is to give Democrats a win just months before the mid-terms.
Democrats already stated that they won’t stop supporting this bill to control guns. They will push on, and continue taking. Politically, it is stupid and totally unnecessary to concede at this point. Cornyn, and others should realize this quickly as the backlash will be quick. While the opposition is burning, Republican voters won’t give in to their supporters.
