Joe and Jill Biden visited Uvalde, Texas, on Sunday in response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that has captured the nation’s attention.
Videos from the various events in the morning showed a mixed reaction, but per Breitbart, controversy struck after the White House uninvited the vast majority of Border Patrol agents that were lined up to attend the president’s private speech Sunday afternoon.
The location of the meeting can hold hundreds. However, over 90% of Border Patrol agents invited were told that time and space limitations mean they are unable to attend. More than 80 Border Patrol agents, including several members of the Border Patrol’s BORTAC special response team involved in the response to the school shooting, received the invitation. Border Patrol received notification late Saturday night that the president could not meet with the remaining 7 agents involved in the response to the school shooting.
According to the report, the last minute change was blamed on “time and space,” despite the fact that the venue doesn’t appear to have been changed. One source described Biden’s move in less than flattering times, accusing him of maneuvering to get a preferred photo-op.
Sources say that Border Patrol mid-level management were assigned to choose who attends and feel the people left behind will not consider their part in the event important. “It appears now as if this planned meeting was nothing more than a photo opportunity with the law enforcement community,” the source says.
Putting on my speculation hat, if I had to guess why this change was made, I’d guess it’s all about the news coming out about the law enforcement response to the Uvalde shooting.
RedState documented that the killer was allowed to stay in school for more than an hour due to a number of unforgiveable decisions. He was even outside of the school for twelve minutes before entering. No police officers arrived. It wasn’t until Border Patrol agents decided to disobey orders from the local police that the shooter was neutralized.
All this being said, although the president may have wanted to enjoy a win with law enforcement while pushing gun control, it is now that the game has changed and law enforcement failings are the main focus. This is why it all happened. That’s where my money would be.
Regardless, it’s pretty weak to invite them when it looks good, and then uninvite them it doesn’t fit the narrative. The Border Patrol did the right thing by removing the shooter. Biden can be cynical or political, but he is not without his fault.
