The one thing I have to say about the Michigan GOP is that it is never boring — and that is the only thing I can say on the family-friendly pages of RedState. You can watch my program Duke Over America right here at RedState. BIOPerhaps I am a little harsher.
It could be even harsher.
Some of you might have caught my show this past Sunday on WAAM Radio 1600 A.M. & 92.7 F.M. in Ann Arbor, where I go over some of the damn lunacy of what people who call themselves “patriots” are spewing. You can watch the entire show here to see more of what the insane try to do competently. PODCAST Duke Over America WAAM Radio Edition 191 Sunday August 21-2022.
Since that show aired and the announcement by the Republican nominee Tudor Dixon of Shane Hernandez as her pick for Lieutenant Governor, let’s say that stuff has gotten a bit more interesting than it normally does in the Great Lake State.
So let’s start with the basics.
Starting at Detroit News…
Tudor Dixon, a Michigan Republican candidate for the governorship in Michigan has chosen Shane Hernandez from Port Huron to be her running mate. This could place someone who is familiar with Lansing and a few other outsiders at the top.
Hernandez, who is known for being a conservative member of the state Legislature in Texas, failed to run for the U.S. House in 2020. In fact, Hernandez served as the chairperson for one term of the House Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Committee is responsible for crafting the state’s annual budget.
“Shane Hernandez as lieutenant governor will help to improve our schools, create safer communities and improve our economy,” Dixon said Friday in a statement. “Like me, Shane is concerned about the impact rising prices are having on our families.”
This seems to be a fairly innocuous choice. Hernandez is someone I only had a brief acquaintance with once. There was no controversy surrounding him. The people here who still feel a feverish sense of anger at their candidate’s loss in the August 2nd primary aren’t going to let up, it seems.
Rumours have circulated that Hernandez, the chosen pick, would be replaced at this weekend’s GOP state convention in Lansing. Michigan voters choose the top ticket. The candidate can pick their running mate, but it has to be approved by the party convention following the primary.
From what I know, most whispering is unfounded rumor-mongering. Here’s why.
When I ask for any of these wild, crazy stories to be proven or backed up by little things called EVIDENCE, I’m told to do my research and Google it. You will generally tell people who you claim are ignorant that you have a knowledge of something as a fact. This is accomplished with joy and passion that’s similar to a child opening Christmas gifts on December 25th.
But not with this crowd that values feelings over facts.
Knowing that I was not an expert on the LG choice, I reached out to trusted people to get some information. All of the people I spoke to had glowing comments and rejected any naysayers. Yet, I still wanted to make sure that my I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed and I came across a post from a former state representative that is about as solid as they come.
Former Michigan State Representative and current Michigan School Board member Tom McMillin is a CPA by trade and is exactly the type of person who does not give the thumbs up to anything Republican-related just because the GOP brass wants it. I think he has been a bit too harsh on the party bosses at times, and that is really a good thing.
The following Sunday, he posted it.
Following up on that is a message on former Michigan State Senator Patrick Colbeck’s Facebook page where someone wondered if voting for a third-party candidate would teach the Michigan GOP a lesson. Here was Patrick’s response.
No. Tudor should be our choice. Michigan is going to be ruined by Whitmer and his ilk for four more years. We support closed primaries.
These gentlemen are known for their opposition to GOP, YOU DO NOT SAY Orders and they have not been afraid to speak out. Both men are low-key and offer support for the candidate against Big Gretch. However, this does not necessarily mean that they agree with the way the Michigan GOP has been run. It is clear that they are aware of what an awful job the governor has done in four years. They would like to help us get out of the current mess.
It is now clear that the Boot Hernandez crew’s dreams and hopes are being quashed by the decision of some people who ran against Dixon but came up short, to not seek nomination for the convention. Garret Sollano played an important role in helping to repeal some of the laws Gretch was using during COVID.

My two sons have been missing me for the last 2 1/2 years. It’s high time that I give my all to my boys.
Thank you for all your support and encouragement over the last 72 hours.
I’m not interested in running to be LT Governor.— Garrett For Michigan (@GarrettForMI) August 22, 2022

Can a challenge be had on Saturday? It could, and it is possible.
However, I hope that any challenges are based on things that Republicans have said in the past that they stood for — like facts and proof of the said facts. After this convention, the days of being ridiculously like Democrats by acting as them and screaming RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA about everything should end.
The object should be to beat the person who is governor now — not the person who is not the dream boat you voted for on August 2nd.
Like the Rolling Stones used to say:
You Can’t Always Get What You Want, But If You Try Sometimes You’ll Get What You Need.
