Iconic Baptist University Christens Its First LGBT Student Org – Opinion

Sometimes, news stories can serve as major markers of cultural changes. You can file this one as follows.

Texas’s Baylor University — an icon in American Christian education — has charted its first LGBT student organization.

On April 20, the Baylor Lariat gave the good news.

Baylor has officially chartered Prism as a student organization for LGBTQ+ and allies on Tuesday. It began its process in fall 2021.

Lor Duncan, a senior at Prism in Heber Springs (Ark.), said that Student Activities held several listening sessions last fall with various members of the Baylor Community. The process began when four students volunteered to assist in the creation of a constitution.

It seems there’ll be secrets involved:

Duncan stated that the constitution was created by Duncan and their membership agreement in order to safeguard students who are still not out. Duncan stated that there was a large number of participants in chartering the organisation, which included students as well faculty.

The group’s mission statement, as listed on the Baylor Connect page:

Prism is Baylor University’s student organization. It has the mission to create a safe space for students and to give voice to LGBTQ+ students (care), as well as to provide opportunities for them to connect, belong, and learn.

More from Lor, courtesy of Waco’s KWTX:

“We are providing not only a space for LGBTQ+ students to have a community and have respectful discussions about sexuality, gender identity, and how those things can intersect with faith and spirituality, but we also want to provide resources; educational, physical, mental, spiritual, emotional.”

It’s not something one might’ve expected from a Christian school. But Christian institutions — and Christianity — are changing. This is not only in relation to homosexuality or transgenderism.

Baylor’s is not just Christian; it is Baptist.

LGBT promotion has also recently made news in another most unlikely place — the state of Alabama:

When the Rainbow thrives in the Baptist church and the Bible Belt’s buckle, America’s transIt is done.

The rigidity of Christianity’s faith, particularly in sex, was once a hallmark. And the belief in a Creator centered on the notion that “male and female He created them.”

But these days, male and female just aren’t enough.

Or, in some cases, they’re too much:

It seems that the church is being fed by the culture now, rather than the church feeding it. Presumably, it’s feeding it cake gender.

The world is a living, so Baylor, 177 years old, follows the same path.

And surely, so it’s going to go in many more ways.
