House Republicans Monday presented a bill to prevent Big Tech’s approval of Chinese Communist Party top officials from having accounts on American social networks.
The “China Social Media Reciprocity Act” would prevent certain officials and “entities” of the genocidal Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from being on Big Tech platforms. New GOP legislation targets multiple Chinese state media outlets and officials currently using Facebook and Twitter.
Fox News pointed out Tuesday in Fox News that Chinese propaganda is often posted on American social media platforms. However, U.S. government officials are prohibited from posting to Chinese social networks.
“Chinese officials should not be allowed to spew propaganda on U.S.-based social media sites while actively blocking the free flow of ideas on their own sites,” Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) told Fox News.
Mast proposed the bill. The bill is supported by Reps. Jim Banks and Thomas Tiffany (R–WI), as well as Joe Wilson (R–SC). According to Fox News, the bill would be applicable to all American-owned social networking companies.
Banks noted the “staggering amount of hypocrisy” associated with the CCP’s social media use. “China bans its own citizens from using Twitter and Facebook, but Chinese Communist Party officials still use those platforms to push their propaganda abroad,” Banks told Fox News.
The hypocrisy displayed by American social media firms that ignore propaganda from dictatorial regimes or leaders while censoring conservative U.S. officials was also highlighted by Banks.
“Freedom always wins over tyranny, and the Chinese Communist Party knows it. That’s why they’ve taken drastic steps to keep American ideas off of their social platforms,” Fox News quoted Mast as saying. “This bill is about leveling play.”
Mast added, “Chinese officials should not be allowed to spew propaganda on U.S.-based social media sites while actively blocking the free flow of ideas on their own sites.”
The bill would provide an exception to the ban “with respect to an individual or entity if the President certifies to the appropriate congressional committees that the Government of the People’s Republic of China … [has]Verifiably lifted restrictions on the United States Government officials from accessing, using or taking part in [Chinese] social media platforms,” according to the bill text.
CCP accounts do more than spread propaganda through social media. They also sometimes advocate violence. MRC Free Speech American reported in October that CCP state media outlet Global Times threatened to make Taiwan and Australia “cannon fodder” on Twitter.
