Granada Hills, CA High School Barring Unvaxxed Students From Graduation – Opinion

It’s a seminal moment in so many people’s lives. It’s one they will cherish and remember for all their lives.

About 1,100 high school students are set to live this moment, and they will graduate high school on Thursday, June 2nd. They will proudly take to the stage before their friends and parents at Granada Hills Charter High School, California.

Yet, in another sign of the nation’s growing cruelty toward our children, another 70 students are barred from attending due to their vaccination status and will have to watch remotely. Eight are students with special needs.

Simply put, no vax card, no entry.

Worst of all, Granada Hills Charter doesn’t have to do it. The Los Angeles Unified School District has delayed its vaccination mandate until July 1, 2023, but Granada Hills is choosing its own, stricter—more punitive—path.

Parents and students protest the decision by staging a Tuesday demonstration.

Says parent Tom Luna in the Los Angeles Daily News: “We thought we were doing the best for (my son), which we were, but the school let him down. They let us down as parents.”  Mom Parisa Fishback, cofounder of a group called Moms on the Ground, was angry too:

The egregious actions taken by Granada Hills Charter High School to their graduating seniors are both unconstitutional and against federal and state law. We will make every effort to hold them responsible. As of now, we marched for the children that they refuse to let walk.

The school claims that they are doing the right thing by “following the science.” It seems that whenever you hear that phrase lately, it means that punishments and shaming are soon to follow.

“Our board stands by the science that indicates that vaccination is the most effective and best tool available to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safest learning environment possible,” the school said in a statement.  “Our commitment to safety is ever more important as COVID-19 cases are spiking again, and the prospect of outbreaks and new variants is significant.”

The school claims that 99 percent of students who are eligible have had their vaccines administered.

As vaccine efficacy becomes increasingly questionable and research is showing the disastrous effects of pandemic policy on children, the punitive action against the one percent has been taken. Students have reported a huge loss of learning, suicides and overdose deaths. The nation’s mental health has suffered a severe decline, particularly among the youth.

So what do you do if you’re Granada Hills Charter? Our children are punished just a bit more.

It’s sick, how we’ve sold out our young to protect the old. There is a small risk of developing serious illnesses from COVID in the young, so they should be tested prior to graduation. There’s no logical, scientific reason to ban them from a ceremony which will be held outside. Straight from the CDC: “If you want to spend time with people who don’t live with you, outdoors is the safer choice. Outdoor activities are more likely to expose you to COVID-19., even without the use of masks.” (Mining boldly.)

If you’re noticing a certain level of anger from me, you’re not wrong. Although my son was hardworking to get his degree, the ceremony was cancelled in the first year COVID. This was devastating, and my son will never be able to get it back. The Granada Hills children will never be the same.

Those were different times, I know, but to bar these kids now from one of the most important events in their lives now is simply… abuse.
