Google Testing Digital ID Features: Report

Google is believed to be testing digital identification technologies after app updates.

Reclaim the Net reported last Wednesday that Google Wallet would use the new technology.

Although the app is most popular for contactless payments right now, digital IDs as well as health passes and digital IDs are possible.

Mishaal Rahman, a tech researcher claims that Google Wallet can implement a digital identification system for use at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.

“According to strings within Google Play Services v22.31.12, you’ll be able to ‘fly through TSA with just your phone’ by adding your state ID or driver’s license to Google Wallet and presenting it at ‘select TSA checkpoints’,” Rahman tweetedEarlier in the month

Last week, NewsBusters reported on a blog post from World Economic Forum (WEF) that called for “digital ecosystems” around the world.

WEF said digital ID would be the first step to building “digital trust.”

“Building digital trust into our global digital economy can unleash trillions of dollars of opportunities,” the blog reads. “But if we don’t know for certain who we are interacting with online, we cannot have trust. Digital identity must therefore be the foundational element to our digital economy.”

Canada has partnered with WEF in order to establish such a system.

“The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for government services to be accessible and flexible in the digital age,” the country’s plan reads. A federal Digital Identity Program integrated with the pre-existing province platforms is the next step towards making services more accessible.
