Former Tuskegee Airman Asa D. Herring Passes Away at 95 – Opinion

America lost another great hero. According to NBC Phoenix, 12News on Tuesday reported that Lieutenant Colonel Asa D. Hering had died.

Herring was recruited to the Tuskegee airman at the close of World War II. American history is rich with the important all-Black Squadron. The Tuskegee airmen stood up for America, freedom and liberty even when they were denied basic human rights in their homeland. The squadron was nevertheless known for their bravery, perseverance, and resilience.

Herring eventually left the military to pursue his education, and in true Tuskegee Airmen fashion, he didn’t just pursue an education, he excelled at it.

According to the Archer-Ragsdale Arizona Chapter, he has graduated from many technical schools including Tuskegee, AL; Aeronautical University of Chicago; and Lewis College of Science and Technology (Lockport, Illinois).

He also earned a bacherlor’s degree in business administration and business management degree from Ottawa University.

Herring was a decorated military veteran with multiple degrees. However, Herring had difficulty finding work in 1950, segregated America. Herring didn’t let Jim Crow’s evils stop him from making history. After he was discharged from the army, Herring spent the next 22 year kicking and screaming.

He spent 22 years in bases all over the globe, flew 350 combat missions in Vietnam and earned many distinguished medals. Among them were the Distinguished Flying Cross (Brown Star), Bronze Star and Air Medal with 13 Oak Leaf Clusters.

His accomplishments didn’t end there. Herring became the first Black Squadron Commandant at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. He retired from the military and worked as a manager at Western-Electric Co.

America owes Herring a lot of gratitude. Herring fought abroad for freedom and strengthened our case for liberty for fellow Americans back home. He was proud to have served his country even though his country didn’t necessarily serve his needs or the best interests of Black Americans.

He is an example of the resilience and strength of our nation. All of America thanks Lieutenant Colonel Herring, for all his sacrifices and perseverance against great injustice.

Herring died in Phoenix, at 95 years old.
