After being told we must care about the outrage over Chappelle’s special, nothing was accomplished.
Journalists love drama and controversy. However, they also enjoy demeaning those who are unable to care about their pet issues. An act of apathy can indicate that people are not educated. Hate and intolerance should also be mentioned. This behavior of reporting to broaden their own import was on full display with the contrived controversy over Dave Chappelle’s latest hour-long show, and it has led to absolutely nothing being accomplished.
Take a look at all the outrages that were displayed to us last month following the publication of his standup special. Hate, intolerance, attacks and hate were all mentioned in the show. Netflix employees were furious at Netflix for encouraging a transphobic message, creating dangerous work environments, and fostering an environment where people are afraid. The media carried all of the protests and demands on the Netflix campus.
Two names were prominent from within the company in the trans activism – Terra Field, and B. Pagels-Minor. Field was disciplined immediately after the outrage was revealed, though it later emerged that this was due to an internal incident unrelated to the show. Pagels Minor was the one who orchestrated the protest. After a couple of weeks of relative calm, things are now quiet. There was almost a crack in the facade of force from the start.
The news about the protest quickly became hyperbolic, even though it was initially reported as a mass walkout. What was positioned as a mass walkout quickly became a promised crowd of “workers supporters,” then the actual crowd diminished to mere dozens in the Netflix parking lot, and their numbers were nearly matched by those of the counter-protestors.
The pronouncements that day were ridiculous because quickly dispatched were the outrages at Chappelle. The protest quickly became about giving trans people more jobs in Hollywood and creating a safer work environment at Netflix. The protestors wanted equal treatment, but they also had specific demands. This has resulted in little to no change, if any.
Both of the people at the heart of this scandal are now gone from Netflix. Pagels-Minor was dismissed for publishing company secrets at the beginning of the strike. Field is now following in his footsteps. You can issue a resignation noteAccording to her, the decision was made in support of the colleague. It is important to note that A suit that was brought to them by bothAll allegations of unfair labor practices were dropped. This does not seem to indicate that anything significant has been accomplished.
“My clients have resolved their differences with Netflix and will be voluntarily withdrawing their NLRB charge,” Laurie Burgess, a labor lawyer representing Pagels-Minor and Field, said. She refused to give more details.
Given all the abuse and outrage displayed in the media for many weeks, it would not surprise that someone of merit was noticed. It was impossible to achieve your activist goals after the loud display of anger and the bold demands against the company. You could not follow this up with a win speech that included no-comment. This is an obvious sign that not much, if any, has been achieved.
Nothing of significance has occurred due to the hysterics captured on video and bold headlines printed on newspapers. But at least a large swath of the country was able to be insulted and told they were intolerant, all because…well now, I have no idea what the controversy was all about. You would have expected something from this effort considering how much space was devoted to it.
