Disney Severely Miscalculated — and Republicans Shouldn’t Forgive and Forget – Opinion

Consternation continues over Florida’s Parental Rights In Education Bill. As RedState reported, the falsehoods being perpetrated about the bill are mind-numbing, including the idea that it bans saying the word “gay,” when that term is not even mentioned in the text.

Because major corporations believe being awake is lucrative, Disney decided that it was a good idea to join the fray and denounce the legislation. Gov. Ron DeSantis replied by telling them to jump into a lake. Disney Corp. has now retaliated and halted all political donations. About 80 percent of Florida’s political contributions went to Republicans.

That the false “Don’t Say Gay” moniker continues to be used by the mainstream media as a factual label in regards to this bill is an astonishing breach of journalistic ethics, but I digress. Water is wet.

As to Disney, I think they’ve severely miscalculated here. It did not experience widespread opposition from its workers regarding the bill. CNN fabricated the story, citing two posts on social media to support its claims of an outcry. The bill doesn’t even accomplish what the most vocal critics claim. Disney could easily been neutral, pointed to the facts, and maintained its relationships with Florida Republicans.

Instead they wired that bridge and tore it apart. What? How to make the woke mob, which can never be satisfied happy, for just a second? How will Disney react next time he wants a legal or tax cut from the state. All those friendly GOP faces aren’t going to be there, and DeSantis has made it clear he will not be brought to heel by private companies trying to throw their weight around.

Disney will now have to explain to their normal customers, parents who make up a large portion of their customer base, why they support a bill which stops teachers from indoctrinating young children sexually. Which was more likely than the other to visit Disney World? A couple from Florida with young children to defend or a woke, purple-haired warrior. In other words, from a financial standpoint, Disney’s move to go to war with DeSantis and the Parental Rights in Education bill was incredibly stupid.

We were planning to take our kids to Disney next year, and I can tell you that’s not going to happen now. All people have lines. Any corporation stupid enough to make their customers choose between sides should be ashamed.

Recalling the Republicans issue, however, it is important that they do not forsake and forget. Disney is likely to come back arm in arm, possibly with the Chamber of Commerce and asking for another handout. If they do so, you should instruct them to grind the sand. These battles against mega-corporations, particularly on issues of cultural importance, should be welcomed by Republicans. There’s never been a better time to reject cronyism and embrace the freedom of doing what voters actually want, and anyone who has looked at DeSantis’ campaign war chest lately will see that doing so also happens to be a winning strategy.
