Decision in Steve Bannon Case Is Another Example of Our Two-Tiered Justice System – Opinion

We’re at a tipping point where what makes our country special — equal justice under the law — has become endangered and so perverted by the two systems of justice currently being applied in this country. It’s been coming on like a freight train since Hillary Clinton got a pass in 2016, but it’s getting worse, as we see it affecting more cases that involve politics, including with things like the 2020 riots vs. the Jan. 6 riots.

On Friday, Steve Bannon was found guilty of contempt of Congress for refusing to respond to the Democrats’ Jan. 6 Committee subpoena to testify in the show trial. For each of his two misdemeanor offenses, Bannon could spend 30 days or more in jail.

All the Committee members were appointed by Democrats, so it’s not a true bipartisan committee. This committee is not interested in the truth. It wants to do all it can for Republicans. It is determined to harm the GOP in the midterms and to do everything it can to prevent Donald Trump’s run for office in 2024.

Following the decision, Bannon told members of the media that “we may have lost,” but “We’re not going to lose this war.”

Bannon defense attorney David Schoen said that the prosecutor’s argument “completely tears asunder constitutional principle of separation of powers.”

“But shame on this office of the United States Attorney’s Office and the Department of Justice for how far it is. Today, they made an argument that was completely against the Constitutional principle regarding separation of powers. They argued to the jury today that when a person gets a subpoena, and executive privilege is invoked, it’s for Congress to decide whether the executive privilege is valid and how broad it is. That’s absolutely false,” Schoen said.

Michael Barbaro, the host of the New York Times’ “The Daily,” said this showed there were “consequences” for failure to respond, and others on the left crowed about the conviction.

But the problem is that the “consequences” seem to be all on one side, once again.

As many pointed out on Friday after the Bannon decision came down, Eric Holder was never prosecuted despite the House holding him in contempt for withholding documents from Congress in the Fast and Furious gun-running investigation — one of the many Obama scandals that never met justice because they refused to turn over evidence. It’s the difference between investigation into a real scandal vs. refusing to comply with a Stalinist show trial, and there’s only prosecution and conviction in the latter.

It wasn’t just Holder. Lois Lerner was also able to avoid being prosecuted in an Obama Justice Department case regarding the targeting of conservative organizations.

Bannon is not the only one affected. It’s getting worse. It’s an incredible problem, when Americans look at this kind of thing. They can see the differences, when they can’t be assured that there is equal justice under the law. This is a threat to the fabric of society.
