Dan Rather Attempts Political Dunk, Falls Face First in the Dirt – Opinion

Dan Rather versus all facts is one of the great rivalries within sports. A journalist who talks a lot about honesty and integrity is still nonetheless remembered for a blockbuster story that turned out to be based on forgeries – a story he still stands by to this day.

Rather attempted to score a point online and pursue political discourse in its latest attempt. This was in response to a New York Timesarticle on the January 6th committee, which was responsible for preparing charges against Donald Trump.

In a court filing in a civil case in California, the committee’s lawyers for the first time laid out their theory of a potential criminal case against the former president. According to them, they have evidence that could lead to Mr. Trump and his conservative attorney John Eastman being charged with conspiracy defrauding the American people and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

The filing also said there was evidence that Mr. Trump’s repeated lies that the election had been stolen amounted to common law fraud.

Although the filing contained limited evidence of new evidence, the committee requested that the judge in civil cases review all relevant materials behind closed doors. The committee relied heavily on detailed and extensive accounts that Mr. Trump’s allies had already published to support their claim of criminality in claiming Trump was guilty.

To seal this tale’s importance, Rather attempted to dunk, but he fell on his face, much to our surprise.

Rather’s tweet is a reference to Star Wars: A New HopeThis 1977 film was the beginning of a huge franchise. The scene he is referring to is one in which the heroes – Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia Organa – find themselves trapped in a trash compactor in the villains’ stronghold. The main characters discover that there is something living in the chamber and the walls are closing in on them.

This sure looks like doom for heroes. That was the point Rather was trying to make. That the walls are closing in on Trump and his allies in the wake of the January 6 committee’s investigation.

Spoiler Alert: The movie’s heroes, Rather and Rather, eventually found a way to escape thanks to the droids who accompanied them.

The two would go on to save their galaxy, appearing in many more films in the franchise and becoming some of the most beloved heroes in history.

The January 6th committee’s potential Trump charges and my opinion about them are completely unrelated. They are not going to have anything and this is all a show for voters, who seem increasingly disinterested either in the January 6 committee or in January 6, 2021 in general.

But this “walls are closing in narrative” has been used by Democrats and folks in the media pretty much since Trump came into office.

Trump somehow manages to get around the closing walls each and every time. After some reflection, you realize that these were not closing walls at all. This was just rhetoric by a bunch of people who lost the election and wanted every reason to think that their vote was stolen.

That surely couldn’t be the case, though, considering their extremely strong stance on upholding democracy.
