Creator and Producers of ‘The Conners’ Spread More Anti-Gun Propaganda in Interviews

ABC’s The Conners pushed an anti-gun agenda last Wednesday in an episode (“Triggered”) that featured a mass shooting near the Conners’ family home.  As if the episode wasn’t bad enough, the creator and producers spread more anti-gun propaganda in interviews with Deadline and TV Line.

Lecy Goranson, who plays Becky and was the episode’s creator, told Deadline that violence via gun “is an epidemic all over the country,” and, “the problem has worsened since the Covid pandemic with gun sales going up exponentially.”

She seems to be implying that a rise of gun sales is a sign of violence, rather than a solution. Fee.com reports that guns can prevent 2.5 million crimes per annum (6,849 per day), and include 400,000 serious, life-threatening violent crimes. According to a Daily Signal article, guns are responsible for saving 90% of all lives. Sites like Guns Save Life or Concealed Nation track real-life cases where guns save lives. GunOwners.org provides additional statistics about guns used for protection.

In the TV Line interview, executive producer Dave Caplan warned “gun violence” is so pervasive that it’s “coming for you eventually, because we’re really not doing anything about it.”

This claim is absurd when you consider the number of anti-gun laws that liberals have passed across the nation. Caplan’s own words betray his claim because they’re proof that anti-gun laws have done nothing to stop criminals from obtaining and using guns to commit violent crimes.

Even though Goranson told Deadline, “We have a great need for mental health care,” she told TV Line, “there’s a myth that everyone who shoots a gun has to have a mental illness.”

She further stated, “There are a lot of people who have twists and turns in their lives… a lot of people are just having a bad day, get in a fight and shoot someone. People who are irritated, people who lose their jobs… All this life stuff that’s really been accentuated and exaggerated by COVID is real. You can’t just attribute everything to mental illness.”

The notion that a mentally healthy person who owns a gun could go on a mass shooting spree or “get in a fight and shoot someone,” because they had a bad day and/or were tired of COVID is not only inaccurate, but it’s also an insult to responsible gun owners everywhere.

A study done by the U.S. Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center into 41 school attacks found that mental health played a tremendous role in each incident and that recognizing red flags could prevent such attacks in the future, all of which would likely apply to any mass shooting incident. It was also found that it is important to have people who can stop any attack nearby.

If Conners truly wanted to “represent all sides and all views” as executive producer Bruce Helford claimed in the Deadline interview, they would have included all the facts, not just baseless claims based on emotion. Although guns are not the problem, they can be the solution. However, Hollywood’s ethos is that emotions overtrump facts. This is made even clearer by these interviews than what the episode did.
