Fact-checkers may need to make a quick ruling, such as “True But But But But.”
Snopes.com attacked the Washington Free Beacon and conservative media outlets Tuesday for reporting something false — that Biden’s Department of Health and Human Services had announced a grant program which included safe smoking kits, including glass pipes to crack cocaine. Dan MacGuill could be known as Dan MacShill. He used the True But method.
It’s true that the grant description required the provision of harm reduction supplies, and listed “safe smoking kits” as an example — an established component of harm reduction strategy — In reality however,The kits represented just one sub-component of a much longer list that was required for grant recipients. In other words, while outraged media coverage focused almost exclusively on “crack pipes,” this was actually only a very small part of the program.
Wow! It’s true that only a portion of the program is “Mostly False,” but it doesn’t mean that this makes it “Mostly False.” True, but …. you don’t like how it looks.
MacGuill complained, “Collectively these articles and posts on social media gave readers a Reductive and grossly misleadingPresentation of what was a true substance abuse harm mitigation grant. It was a “harm reduction grant” that allows drug abuse to be funded by taxpayers.
Patrick Hauf, a journalist and once intern for MRCTV, confirmed the story.
According to a spokesperson for the agency, Washington Free Beacon that these kits will provide pipes for users to smoke crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, and “any illicit substance.”
HHS stated that the kits are intended to lower the chance of getting infected by smoking glass pipes. This can cause sores and cuts.
Snopes also claimed it was inaccurate for the spicy Free Beacon headline — “Biden Admin To Fund Crack Pipe Distribution To Advance ‘Racial Equity’ — was inaccurate. Enjoy McGuill’s embarrassingly obstructive Twister game.
Second, safer smoking products were not intended to promote racial equality. Its objective was rather to lower harm and infect existing drug users. But, it was stated in the grant description that applicants serving historically marginalized communities would receive priority. In other words, the grant’s terms encouraged recipients to advance racial equity while working for harm reduction, not the other way round — a crucial distinction which many outlets got wrong.
“Crucial distinction” Could be another “truth rating”, for fact-checkers who want to declare that the conservative spin is false. Dan MacShill isn’t buying it.
HHS released a statement on Wednesday, indicating that “safe smoking kit” will not include glass pipes. Snopes was able to salvage face by changing its “Mostly False”, silly ruling, to “Outdated”
Again, “Independent fact-checkers” look very partisan and incapable of handling the truth. When it renders Democrats terrible …. and gives Hunter Biden an opportunity to make a joke about him.
