Congressional Democrats Mull Grilling Elon Musk on Buying Twitter – Opinion

Democrats, their friends, and associates in activist media are mad at Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter. Why? They are afraid of the possibility that someone like him could create a level playing ground when it comes down to political discourse. Under the guise of stopping “disinformation” and “misinformation,” the leftists at the company have engaged in politically-biased censorship against conservative voices. The only problem Democrats in government have had with Twitter and other social media companies is that they don’t censor enough.

Now that there appears to be a new sheriff, Democrats in Congress are pondering how to react. Bloomberg News published a report on Sunday indicating that some Democrats in the Senate are looking at dragging Musk before Congress to testify on his intentions when it comes to reforming Twitter’s ModerationPractices of censorship “We’re thinking about it,” said Senate Commerce Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA) during a Thursday interview.

The lawmaker referred to other occasions in which former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Meta Platforms Inc.’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg were called to testify. These individuals were questioned by senators regarding Section 230. This section provides protections for user-generated content.

Musk stated his intent to make Twitter a platform that allows free speech and is free from political-biased censorship after he agreed to buy Twitter. Liberals and conservatives alike welcomed the move. They have been complaining for years about the inconsistent application of Twitter’s terms and conditions, and showing preference towards left-leaning users.

Delegate Ed Markey (D.MA), who is on the Commerce Committee has repeatedly advocated for legislation to regulate Big Tech firms and limit speech. He insists that Musk being brought in front of Congress is the best move.

“It’s a technology which is central to democracy and our economy and it is important for the representatives of the American people to hear what the new owners intend on using that technology to accomplish,” Markey told Bloomberg. “We have to understand the censorship or lack thereof, content moderation or not, that is going to be the policy for the new owner.”

Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic senator from Connecticut, agreed with his colleagues. He said that Musk must be forced to testify. “There is a powerful imperative to ask him to tell Congress and the American people how he’s going to address the concerns that we’ve raised,” he said.

These facts should not come as a shock.

When it became apparent that Musk would likely become Twitter’s new owner, it became obvious that Democrats would seek to use the power of the state to rein him in. Jen Psaki, White House Press Secretary, indicated that the administration may push legislation to fix Section 230 to pressure Twitter and other Big Tech companies into increasing their censorship. Before this, the White House had tried to force Facebook to censor any views on COVID-19 not in line with the Democrat-approved narrative.

Currently, Democrats in Congress say they only consider Musk as a witness. But we already know it’s only a matter of time before they haul him to the Capitol building, don’t we? It’s possible they won’t do it tomorrow. Maybe they’ll wait till he becomes the head of Twitter. They believe that a reckoning must be done and will do whatever it takes to get Musk on board. Now the question is, will Elon Musk bow to the demands?
