Jim Acosta, CNN’s host and Democrat congressman joined in dismissing the necessity to lock up serious criminals. The two also fretted about Fox News’s thoughtful criticisms of President Joe Biden for failing to criticize his soft-on crime policies.
Ironically, just days earlier, CNN law enforcement analyst Andrew MCCabe — a Democrat — admitted that the Biden administration should do more to enforce current gun laws.
Acosta spoke with Ritchie Torres, a New York congressman, on Saturday to ask about the possibility that a new push is being made to create federal gun laws. Torres then blamed Southern states for New York’s criminal use of guns. Acosta followed this up with a video clip. Fox & FriendsBrian Kilmeade, co-host on Friday morning is available:
Just to imagine that Mark Penn, Democratic strategist looks at these figures — a man like James Carville could look at President Biden with a blank expression and simply say “Hey, this can’t be solved by mentioning guns.” If you actually want to get some votes — if you want to reverse the momentum” that’s going against their party–
After an edit jump, Fox’s Steve Doocy complained about President Biden’s remarks on crime while he was visiting New York. Doocy said: “It should have been, ‘I’m Joe Biden. I’ve come here to New York to improve safety. And we’re going to throw the book at anyone who breaks the law. He said it yesterday.
After Kilmeade had finished his remarks, Fox News’ host Acosta pointed out an increase in crimes committed by criminals without firearms. Acosta, who was unsure of the context, seemed concerned that Fox would compromise Democrats’ liberal agenda. So he asked Acosta: “What’s your response to that?” As you all know, Fox’s comments can cause your Republican House colleagues to repeat the same things. How do you react to such a thing?
Congressman Torres received no pushback as he preposterously claimed that “there’s no evidence that overpolicing leads to greater public safety” in spite of the fact that crime dropped for 20 years in New York as there was a turn toward strict policing. Andrew McCabe, himself admitted that more laws needed to be enforced on Thursday afternoon.
But what I’d like to see more of, Ana (Cabrera), is just a basic commitment to prosecuting people at the federal level for simple gun offenses like possession of a firearm by a felon. These kinds of issues are common at both the local and state levels. But often, our state-level partners lack the resources or the ability to ensure that those who carry guns with intent to commit crimes get jail time. It’s not right that that should happen. The federal government has the ability to help in this regard if they assign prosecutors.
McCabe went on the lean left on the rest of his analysis as he blamed an increase in gun sales for more shootings since 2020 when, in fact, the increase in gun sales would have been a reaction to the increase in crime that occurred after media coverage of the George Floyd case.

ANDREW McCABE, CNN LAW ENFORCEMENT ANALYST: The second thing is the steps he is proposing to take — some of them, I think, will have a direct effect on this wave of gun violence, you know, targeting interstate trafficking of handguns is a good thing. But what I’d like to see more of, Ana, is just a basic commitment to prosecuting people at the federal level for simple gun offenses like possession of a firearm by a felon. All of these things are brought in daily at the state level and locally, but our state-level partners often don’t possess the resources necessary to make sure that any person who has a firearm with the intent to be a criminal is sentenced. It’s not right that that should happen. The federal government has the ability to help in this regard if they assign prosecutors.
ANA CABRERA : The effort will be a massive team effort as well as a community effort. I do want to emphasize some of the stats that you brought up. According to CNN’s analysis of data from police departments, in 2021 10 cities with the highest homicide rates set records. The 2020 national increase in murders was followed by a 2021 spike that, according to the CDC, was the greatest for a single-year in more than a hundred years. Andrew, what makes you believe violent crime is increasing?
McCABE: Ana, let’s call the elephant in this room. It is the flood of guns flooding across the country. Just before I came on, I looked at numbers and saw that there were a few more background checks if we look at FBI’s NIX which conducts background checks for firearms sale. There were 26 million background checks in 2018, which was a lot more than the 2018 number. Gun sales are subject to one background check. The number reached 28 million in 2019. The number of background checks for NIX increased from 2018 to 2019, from 28 to 29 million, to 39, million in just one year. This wave, that infusion of guns into the streets and into the homes of people — has an unstoppable impact on violent crime. We are seeing it now.

BRIAN KILMEADE – Tucker Carlson weighed into last night and said that we are not addressing the problem. This means that nothing is going to be solved.
TUCKER CARLSON FOX NEWS HOOST: Remember that in New York City many gun laws have been repealed by Biden-endorsed politicians. Do you remember Stop-and Frisk? This was against the equity agenda. You can’t have it. Illegal gun owners are getting away with it. Joe Biden’s child, by and large, also violated Federal firearms laws. He broke gun laws — a felony. He wasn’t prosecuted. You can’t keep a gun inside your house because “no amendment to the Constitution is absolute.” (Editing jump). The bottom line is that guns aren’t being enforced. It’s the root of the problem.
AINSLEY. EARHARDT is our new D.A. It will not put you in jail — even if you are able to rob the store using a gun, it will not get you in trouble. You can only be in prison if that weapon is fired. It is insane. It’s crazy. They are telling the public, “Follow the people firing the guns — the criminals with these illegal weapons in their homes — they won’t just go off by themselves — somebody is actually pulling that trigger. If you allow them to walk the streets with their guns, as long as you do not put up any high-security bars and they aren’t firing them, these will continue to be problems.

KILMEADE – I think Mark Penn, Democratic strategist looks at these numbers — James Carville might look at President Biden, and say “Hey! To solve this, it’s not enough to mention guns.” If you actually want to get some votes — if you want to reverse the momentum” that’s going against their party, you should look at the stats. In January, Robbery rose 33 percent; rape rose 27 percent; felony assault was 12 percent; grand larceny rose 58 percent. It’s not enough to blame guns.
EARHARDT We told the mother’s story. Her child was riding in her car, and her husband went to the supermarket. Interviewed about the situation, she replied, “It doesn’t matter if Riker Island gets filled up — that’s what a prison’s for. You can fill it with criminals.”

JIM ACOSTA: The proposals that you’re talking about and the administration is talking about include new initiatives by the Justice department aimed at combating the ghost guns, drug-related violence, and so on. These plans: What are your thoughts? Are they enough? What about getting back at the table to try to get Congress moving on new gun safety legislation, background checks and such?
CONGRESSMAN RITCHIE TORRES(D-NY): Here in New York City Mayor Adams has made every effort to stop the growing epidemic of gun violence. However, there is a limit on what he’s able to do locally. Federal action cannot be substituted. Most of the guns that are recovered in New York City crime scenes are coming from the South — are going through the iron pipeline. This iron pipeline runs from the South into the Northeast. The federal government needs to take a more active role in dismantling the ironpipe, which has resulted in an explosion of gun deaths on New York City streets. The biggest threat to public safety we face is Republican opposition to gun safety.
ACOSTA. And then you stated that New York’s “defund the Police” movement is over. Many people looked up at you when that was said. But, I’m sure a lot Democrats will agree with your statement. This is why a lot American Americans agree with you.

Here’s Fox morning news’ coverage of the President’s trip to New York. Let’s watch.
BRIAN KILMEADE FOX NEWS HOST: If Mark Penn, Democratic strategist looks at these numbers — a man like James Carville might look at President Biden, and say “Hey! To solve this, it’s not enough to mention guns.” If you actually want to get some votes — if you want to reverse the momentum” that’s going against their party–
(editing jump)
FOX NEWS HOST STEVE DOOCY: It should have said, “I am Joe Biden and I came to New York to protect the people.” He did not say it yesterday.
ACOSTA: How did you react to this? As you all know, when Fox announces something, the House Republican colleagues start repeating it. How do you react to all that?
CONGRESSMAN TORRES: Fox News is living in an alternate reality. There would be no gun violence without guns. Republicans should not be denying that they are tough on crime. You can’t be soft on gun violence if you are soft on guns. Guns are America’s most deadly form of violence. Overpolicing is the number one cause of youth death. We saw an increase in murder rates by 50% in New York City between 2011 and 2017. This is because we reduced the number of stops from 700,000. to just 1,200. What we don’t need is aggressive or abusive police — we need precision policing and reinvestments into underserved areas.
