Chuck Todd Wails: GOP Is ‘Gonna Get Power Based on A Lie’

On MSNBC’s MTP Daily, host Chuck Todd wailed that the Republican Party was “built on a lie” and was “gonna get power based on a lie” in November’s midterm elections. Todd and his panel of liberal journalists were expressing frustration that voters don’t seem to care about the Democratic Party’s partisan congressional investigation into January 6th “at all.”

“And Carlos, this gets to the larger picture here, and you’ve expressed your version of disgust on this, which is the party is allowing itself – it’s built on a lie,”Todd complained about Carlos Curbelo, a disgruntled ex-Republican Congressman. The anchor kept going: “So, I mean, it – how do you – you know, they’re gonna get power based on a lie and then what? How do you govern?”

Curbelo eagerly agreed with Todd’s nasty tantrum: “Well, that’s right, Chuck. Right now, the party is an entirely owned subsidiary of Trump. And that is not an entity that can do its job, that can lead without fear….And when you’re motivated by fear…it’s very difficult to lead under those circumstances.”

The ex-GOP politician turned MSNBC contributor then declared: “So you’re gonna see a lot of unity up until November. If they do take over the House, I think all these cracks are gonna emerge again and we’ll see what comes after that.”

Todd bitterly moaned “The irony, Eugene, here is I don’t know if this matters on the campaign trail – at all.” The Washington Post’s Eugene Scott offered this exasperated reply:

Oh, it absolutely doesn’t. Yeah, [Republican Congressman]Glenn Grothman of Wisconsin said The Washington Post, “Nobody cares about January 6th except for the press.” He literally said that. And so as long as voters are not going to hold these lawmakers accountable for this, they don’t have anything to worry about.

Keeping up his lamentations, Todd fretted the Democrats weren’t bashing Republicans enough leading up to the midterms: “I have probably watched a thousand television ads this cycle, I think I’ve seen two on January 6th….what the right has done with Nancy Pelosi, the left has not done with Kevin McCarthy, have they?”

Reporter Audrey Fahlberg from The Dispatch observed: “I think that right now the Republicans are really trying to express that their voters care about inflation, the border, things like that. I mean, focusing on January 6th is simply not something that they care about….I think that it’s gonna continue to be like that leading up to the midterms.”

Todd bemoaned to Curbelo: “And sadly, Carlos, even though what would be right for the history books, what would be right for this investigation, there is no upside for Kevin McCarthy to voluntarily participate in the January 6th investigation, is there?” Referencing recent leaked audio from the Republican House Minority Leader from that day in 2021, Curbelo agreed: “No, I think the most we’re gonna get from him, you know, are these leaks and secondhand accounts of things that he told other people.”

Todd shared the podcast’s latest episode to prove that viewers still enjoy Republican-bashing. “We have even more on the future of the Republican Party and how all signs are pointing to their inability to govern, on the next episode of Chuck Toddcast.”

This tactic is common among leftist media. Todd, along with other leftist media hacks, immediately declare the GOP ineffective before it has had the chance to run for office.

CHUCK TODD: And Carlos, this gets to the larger picture here, and you’ve expressed your version of disgust on this, which is the party is allowing itself – it’s built on a lie. So, I mean, it – how do you – you know, they’re gonna get power based on a lie and then what? How can you manage?

FMR. REP. CARLOS CURBELO [R-FL]: Well, that’s right, Chuck. Right now the Trump party owns the entire subsidiary. That is an entity that cannot do its job and that has no fear. I mean, House Republicans, especially House Republicans – I think it’s different in the Senate – are constantly looking over their shoulders, see what Donald Trump is doing, where he’s going, what he’s gonna say. And when you’re motivated by fear, in this case, of the former president, it’s very difficult to lead under those circumstances. So you’re gonna see a lot of unity up until November. If they do take over the House, I think all these cracks are gonna emerge again and we’ll see what comes after that.

TODD: The irony, Eugene, here is I don’t know if this matters on the campaign trail – at all.

EUGENE SCOTT [THE WASHINGTON POST NATIONAL POLITICAL REPORTER]: Oh, it absolutely doesn’t. Yeah, [Republican Congressman]Glenn Grothman of Wisconsin said The Washington Post, “Nobody cares about January 6th except for the press.” He literally said that. And so as long as voters are not going to hold these lawmakers accountable for this, they don’t have anything to worry about.

TODD: I think I’ve seen – I have probably watched a thousand television ads this cycle, I think I’ve seen two on January 6th, Audrey. It’s amazing. And even Kevin McCarthy, he’s not yet – he hasn’t – what the right has done with Nancy Pelosi, the left has not done with Kevin McCarthy, have they?

AUDREY FAILBERG [REPORTER, THE DISPATCH]: I believe that the Republicans right now are trying to show that they care about the border and inflation. They don’t care that January 6th is the main focus of their attention. They will always shift the conversation topic when asked about this in public and private. So I think that it’s gonna continue to be like that leading up to the midterms.

TODD: Carlos, sadly there’s no way for Kevin McCarthy, despite what it would mean for history and for this investigation.

CURBELO: No, I think the most we’re gonna get from him, you know, are these leaks and secondhand accounts of things that he told other people. And again, the sad part is that it’s obvious where he stood, as I think a couple of people have said already.

TODD: Yeah.

CURBELO: McCarthy seems like a normal man. His reaction on January 6th was visceral. His reaction to January 6th was visceral. He was anxious, nervous, and agitated. But he can’t say any of these things, he can’t admit them. That’s – that’s just very frustrating.

TODD: Audrey (Eugene) and Carlos (Carlos), thank you. We appreciate your patience with us. But, hey, it’s live television.

On the next episode, The Chuck Toddcast will have more information about the future Republican Party as well as how signs point to them not being able to govern. It’s available right now, get it free wherever you get your podcasts. Matthew Continetti is the host of this conversation.
