At California Lutheran University, they’re keeping an open mind.
The school’s Samuelson Chapel features a prayer chamber called the Mediation Room.
Campus Reform captured the photo. It is believed that there are many resources available to students to help them discover their God-given potential.
The items include a Buddha statue and a Hindu book. The Upanishads and Islam’s Study Quran

Reportedly, a chart promotes “The Golden Rule.”
The poster features Earth in the center, with various religions radiating as rays.
- Hinduism
- Buddhism
- Confucianism
- Taosim
- Sikhism
- Baha’i Faith
- Islam
- Judaism
- Jainism
- Zoroastrianism
- The Native Spirituality
- Unitarianism
- Christianity
Every listed belief system has its own version of the Rule. For instance, Islam asserts, “Not one of you truly believes until you wish for others what you wish for yourself.”
It is possible to argue about the qualifications of just a few:
- SikhismNo one knows me better than I do. Truly, I am friend to everyone.
- The Native SpiritualityAs much as the Earth is alive, we are just as alive.
- UnitarianismWe promote and affirm the respect of the interdependent web that all existences are part of.
Online, Cal Lutheran’s Campus Ministry provides a page linking to “Local Houses of Worship.”

- Bahai Faith
- Hindu Temple Society
- Temple Etz Chaim
- Islamic Center of Conejo Valley

Students are encouraged to find other religious institutions that make them feel at home while attending Lutheran University.
The University encourages an “Interfaith Dialogue” that promotes “a safe place to ask questions, talk together, and learn from the spiritual journeys of others.”
The description claims the interfaith dialogue can help students “delv[e] deeper into [their] own faith traditions.”
Despite Christianity’s conventional wisdom of “[S]traight is the gate, and narrow is the way,” the faith is casting an ever-wider net.

All people are welcome in religious organisations. On Cal Lutheran’s site, under “The Lutheran Education Experience,” the school makes clear, “All are welcome. No one here is an outsider.”
This is one the Lutheran traditions most closely held values. And its importance is evident on campus — our students come from more than 59 countries and embody a wide variety of faiths.
As for Christianity, where’s it headed? In America for the moment, the answer isn’t likely “legalism.”
