Some may claim it’s cancel culture: A planned lunch at a Minnesota Lutheran college has evidently been called off.
The February 25th shindig was open to everybody — except white people.
Here is my coverage of the 11th
Gustavus Adolphus College hosts a People of Color International Faculty Appreciation Dinner. …
The lunch is an interesting choice, perhaps particularly during February — otherwise known as Black History Month.
The 28-day observance, of course, is meant to recognize black Americans who’ve managed fantastic feats. They’re people who have changed the country (and maybe the world), not by pigmentation, but creativity, drive, intellect, courage, and/or commitment to a mission.
But as we’re being increasingly told, that’s the old reason for paying someone their due. Actually, meritocracy in itself is racist.
You could say that the meal slapped every colour of skin: White people were insulted by being left out. The meal was also patronizing, as it praised others for being born.
Presumably the intent was to honour Black History Month. Therefore, it may be no surprise that the apparent replacement was not unexpected.
According to The College Fix: Gustavus Adolphus announced that a Black History Month Lunch will be held after negative publicity about the original plan.
All epidermal tints welcome at this event.

The Office of Equity and Inclusion invites all faculty and staff members to the Black History Month appreciation dinner.
At the forefront of achievement this time will be:
[The event will]Recommend and honour the accomplishments, contributions and legacy made by African Americans.
Bad press aside, financial considerations might’ve mightily deterred the college from excluding an entire race. University of Michigan Flint Professor Mark Perry had filed a complaint with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
The following document is an extract:
[Gustavus Adolphus College] is legally required to enforce Title VI as a condition of receiving federal financial assistance…
Mark spoke of the irony in OCR Chicago
I couldn’t help but notice the irony that the College’s “Office of Equity and Inclusion” is hosting and sponsoring an event that clearly promotes “inequity and exclusion” rather than equity and inclusion by unfairly excluding White faculty and staff. … Further at least for the purposes of the luncheon event the College’s slogan “You Belong Here” doesn’t apply to White faculty and staff. Rather for White faculty staff, it would be more appropriate for the College to say “You Don’t Belong Here,” at least not at this event.
Where inclusion’s concerned, we’re living in interesting times. One common inclusion theme is exclusion.
These are the cases:
Major University Eyes Forcing Professors to Pledge to ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion’ or Have Their Tenures Denied
Disney Lops ‘Ladies and Gentlemen,’ Bounces ‘Boys and Girls’ in the Name of Inclusion
School District Excludes Halloween in the Name of Inclusion, Cancels Cupid’s Age-Inappropriate Arrows
University’s Required Training Labels Straight White Males ‘Oppressors’ — in the Name of Being ‘Inclusive’
Gustavus Adolphus College decided to offer free food for everyone.
Did it happen on the principle that all parties should be respected or just to get around further scrutiny?
However, whatever the outcome, the original plan appears to be scrapped. TCF reports that the Black History Month Event will take place at the same hour and same location as the original lunch for no-whites.
That’s one for integration, but the future surely has much more segregation in store.
