CensorTrack with TR: Really? Liberal Sites Score 93% Accuracy?!

It’s Episode Eighteen of MRC’s newest video series, With TR, CensorTrack This week we’re talking about another attack on conservative speech — NewsGuard’s rating system, which routinely gives right-wing sites lower credibility ratings than leftist sites.

NewsGuard, a site rating firm that gives biased ratings to websites, is called NewsGuard. MRC’s Free Speech America and Business teams recently conducted a study on NewsGuard’s skewed rating system. 

AllSides categorizes media websites. AllSides provided information that was used in the MRC’s analysis. AllSides’ site contains a chart that groups news outlets based on their “bias.” The site categorizes outlets using the titles “left,” “lean left,” “center,” “lean right,” and “right.” The MRC used this chart to determine what constitutes left-wing versus right-wing sites. 

NewsGuard placed leftist sites on average 27 points above right-wing websites. Site for Socialists Jacobin(very left), received a 92.5/100 Fox NewsReceived only a score of 66/100 

NewsGuard didn’t even consider fact-checking legitimately. They were a good score Federalist (right-wing). This is due partly to the article, which challenged the effectiveness mask-wearing in protecting against COVID-19. 

NewsGuard’s scoring not only impacted the sites themselves but the affiliated social media pages of each news outlet as well. Ratings that are low discourage attention from the audience. They can have a negative impact on news outlets’ reach and are therefore a form of onlinecensorship. 

While it was possible that the purpose of this site is to aid users in understanding their credibility and transparency, there’s another system for hiding right-leaning content.
