CBS Erroneously Links GOP Rep. to 1/6 Scouting Despite Clearing Probe

On Wednesday’s CBS Evening News, anchor Norah O’Donnell and congressional correspondent Seth MacFarlane erroneously linked Republican Congressman Barry Loudermilk to an alleged advanced reconnaissance inside the Capitol building prior to the January 6 riots at the Capitol. However, Capitol Police stated that surveillance cameras did not show anything unusual or suspicious.

Not letting facts get in the way, O’Donnell hyped the report claiming “there’s some new developments in the January 6 investigation. The House Select Committee today released stunning new video that’s raising questions about whether there was advanced reconnaissance inside the capitol the day before the insurrection.”

She then went to the January 6 obsessed MacFarlane who claimed “the committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol is focusing on the man in the gray sweatshirt. Seen on surveillance video taking photos of staircases and hallways in the Capitol complex on January 5, the day before the attack.” Adding that “a day later, they say he was recording this video amid a crowd marching to the capitol.”

MacFarlane hyped the footage showing the tour allegedly led by Loudermilk “taking pictures of security checkpoints.” He also reported that “CBS News reached a member of the congressman’s visiting group, who also said it was not a reconnaissance mission” yet he still regurgitated the Jan 6 committee’s talking points that “the group stayed for several hours on a day the complex was closed to the public.”

It wasn’t until the tail end of the segment that MacFarlane revealed that the Capitol Police poured cold water on the Democrat Party’s newest non-controversy: “with the committee focused on this video, Congressman Loudermilk points to a report earlier this week from Capitol Police in which they say they reviewed the actions of that group from January 5 previously and found nothing suspicious.”

Ensure made this biased segment possible. The information they have is linked.

NORAH OWENELL: New developments have been made in Washington since the Jan 6th investigation. A stunning new video from the House Select Committee has been released today. It raises the question of whether advance reconnaissance took place in the capital the day before the rebellion. Tomorrow’s hearing will also reveal the statements of two former Vice President Mike Pence’s key advisors. Robert Costa, CBS News’s correspondent will provide more information in just a moment. However, Scott Macfarlane of CBS will first show us the new video.

SCOTT MACFARLANE. The U.S. Capitol attack investigation committee is now focusing its attention on the gray-colored sweatshirt-wearing man. The man was captured on surveillance camera taking pictures of hallways and staircases within the Capitol Complex on January 5th, the day prior to the attack. They claim he recorded the video in front of a marching crowd on his way to the capitol the day after.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN : We are coming in like white rice. Schumer, Nadler and Pelosi. Even you, AOC. We will take you out. We’ll pull you by the hair.

MACFARLANE. According to the committee, he was part in a Georgia Republican Barry Loudermilk’s tour group. A few took photos of security checks. He denied all wrongdoing.

REP. BARY LOUDERMILK (Rep.): This is a language that I strongly oppose and which I deplore. That day, however, no member of that group displayed that level of aggression. You see, they just came to visit.

MACFARLANE. CBS News reached an individual from Congressman’s visiting team, who confirmed that they were not on reconnaissance missions. The committee however stated that they had allowed the group to stay for many hours during a time when the complex was closed. They also recorded and photographed areas not normally of public interest. Pennsylvania Democrat Brandon Boyle claims that this photograph was taken in a new spot and near a sensitive location.

REP. BRENDAN BYLE: This stairway was close to where a lot of the members went that afternoon, while insurrections were still in progress in the capital.
