In an uncharacteristically honest segment on CNN’s Day of the New, anchor John Berman was forced to cover President Biden’s crumbling poll numbers on the economy and inflation.
During the Thursday segment, Berman brought on CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten to discuss the Biden Administration’s polling troubles. Before Enten spoke, Berman posed this question to him: “When we’re talking about Joe Biden in the economy and the polling on it, just how bad is it?”
The left-leaning anchor was surely disturbed by his answer.
Terrible. Terrible. Historically, it is possible to see the economic approval rating at any point during a presidential term. This is the approval plus the economic disapproval. Joe Biden will be 2021. You’re down 15 points He is well below the waterline. It’s even worse than Jimmy Carter, who was at minus 8 in a CBS News poll. You can see that Biden’s even worse than Trump and Obama were and they were in the negative territories at minus 4 points. Joe Biden’s economic numbers are pretty bad when it comes down to the American people.
Berman was clearly stunned by this response. A Jimmy Carter comparison, particularly for a Democratic president, is not a wise thing. Berman needed clarification. Berman wanted to know what more information Enten had which would’ve inspired the dreaded Carter comparison. Enten obliged.
Let’s see, this is the deal. They were so far down in the trenches. You can clearly see that inflation is not a problem. 84% of Americans agree that it is. In December 1977, 79% was the rate under Jimmy Carter. Inflation is something that can sink a presidency because it’s something that is felt by everybody.
Berman then went into spin mode for the White House by telling CNN viewers that the inflation American consumers are experiencing right now is “There is no inflation comparable to that of the 1970s and 1980s.”
I’m sure this is comforting news to middle and lower-class Americans who are struggling to buy groceries for their families and to fill their gas tanks to get to and from work.
Berman wanted to get to the bottom of this segment and focus on what the polling results really meant.
BERMAN: But just how bad are Biden’s numbers on inflation specifically?
ENTEN : Yes, if you look at people and ask them if they are happy with Joe Biden’s job in managing inflation. This is what you should see. 28 percent, 28 percent of Americans say that they approve of the job. And I think the biggest number in this table that sort of gives it away is just 54 percent of Democrats approve of the job he’s doing on inflation. In this era of polarization, it’s not surprising to see that only six percent of Republicans approve. But the fact that only 54 percent of Democrats approve, look, they are looking at the numbers, they are feeling in their pockets yeah historically if you look at the actual economic measures, perhaps it shouldn’t be comparable to Carter. However, when you look at how individuals feel it is quite clear.
BERMAN: 54 percent among Democrats that’s a problem. Biden’s Presidency.
No kidding. This is clearly distressing news to CNN viewers and liberals. Berman attempted to make the results seem favorable for the Biden Administration. But the numbers speak for them.

JOHN BERMAN – Recent polling shows that President Biden has difficulty instilling confidence in Americans regarding key issues. Economy is one of the areas most insecure. Harry Enten is a CNN senior data journalist. When we’re talking about Joe Biden in the economy and the polling on it, just how bad is it?
Terrible.
BERMAN – You mentioned the Carter example. Do you have any more to add?
ENTEN: Yeah. Here’s the deal. Why was each of them so buried in trenches? You can clearly see that inflation is not a problem. 84% of Americans agree that it is. In December 1977, 79% was the rate under Jimmy Carter. Inflation is something that can sink a presidency because it’s something that is felt by everybody. Jimmy Carter was sunk by it. It’s something that sunk Jimmy Carter. Joe Biden has the time and the will to fix it, but it’s what’s keeping Joe Biden in the gutter.
BERMAN: You know that inflation right now is nothing compared with inflation in the ’70s or ’80s. The idea that Biden is doing even worse than Carter when it isn’t anywhere near like it was. But just how bad are Biden’s numbers on inflation specifically?
ENTEN : Yes, if you look at people and ask them if they are happy with Joe Biden’s job in managing inflation. Take a look at these. This is what 28% and 28% say about the job. This table shows that 54% of Democrats support the work he does on inflation. It’s no surprise that only 6 percent of Republicans support this measure in an era of political polarization. The fact that 54% of Democrats don’t approve is a sign they look at the numbers. They are looking at how they feel in their pockets. Perhaps Carter was more accurate if we look at actual economic indicators. However, when you look at how individuals feel it is quite clear.
BERMAN: 54% among Democrats that’s a problem. The Biden Presidency
(Crosstalk)
ENTEN – Just a bit. It’s not a huge problem.
BERMAN: It’s a problem and what Biden White House and the President are trying to do, is say hey you pass Build Back Better and that actually helps battle inflation. What are people doing with that?
ENTEN: They’re not purchasing it. This is where the problem lies. You know what? If you ask people, do you think Building Back Better would help lower or fight inflation? It will, only 35% are positive. 51% are pessimistic. This is what I believe is the biggest disconnect in the Biden White House right now. They are offering plans they think will benefit the American people, but the American public is not believing them. They feel that Joe Biden has lost sight of the goal. This has been an issue throughout his presidency, at least the past few months. He is constantly offering solutions but the people aren’t buying them as real solutions.
