A gunman broke into the Natalie Medical Building, St. Francis Health System, Tulsa on Wednesday. Five people including the gunman were already dead when the police arrived on the scene less than forty minutes after receiving the 911 call. As police approached, the gunman committed suicide.
Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin offers a very professional overview of events starting at the –29:16 timehack. These are the highlights.
The gunman, 45-year-old Michael Lewis, was armed with an AR-15-style modern sporting rifle and a Smith&Wesson .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol. It was purchased hours prior to the shooting. The pistol was obtained at a Pawnshop on Sunday.
A remote consultation between a doctor and a woman gave the police their first clue. Before dropping the call, the doctor advised her to dial 911 regarding shots at the hospital.
Lewis underwent back surgery May 19. Lewis complained about extreme pain following the procedure, but Dr. Preston Phillips refused to give him more medication. Other orthopedic surgeons, including Dr. Stephanie Husen, Amanda Green and William Love were also murdered. Police found a note on Lewis’s body. Chief Franklin: “We found a letter on the suspect that he wanted to kill Dr Phillips and would kill anyone that got on his way, he blamed Dr. Phillips for the pain following his surgery.”
White supremacy doesn’t seem to be an issue as the intended victims were both middle-aged Black men. It appears that the weapons were legally purchased.
