The radical liberal billionaire who became infamous for backing a group that “spread disinformation during the 2017 Alabama special election for U.S. Senate” is throwing money behind so-called “mainstream” Democrats in an attempt to prevent Republicans from winning control of Congress.
Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn founder and long-time donor to Democratic Party. He spent at least $3,835,509 to oppose former President Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential re-election campaign and at least $678,703 to support then-presidential candidate Joseph Biden, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records. FEC records reveal that Hoffman donated $500,000 to Mainstream Democrats Political Action Committee in February 2018. But the MDP made it clear that it has a special purpose: defeat Trump by supporting so-called “mainstream” Democrats. The MDP even declared war on “far-left organizations” that it claims have attempted a “hostile takeover” of the Democratic Party on its website.
Hoffman’s six-figure donation in February made him one of the top contributors to the MDP this year, according to FEC records, and one of the most important players working behind the scenes of Democratic politics, as CNBC noted in a story Tuesday.
Hoffman and MDP may not be moderates, but they are certainly not conservative. Notorious leftist billionaire George Soros and Hoffman teamed up to tighten censorship and tackle so-called “disinformation” through an organization called “Good Information Inc.,” in 2021. But the leftist bias of the site is clear: Fox News host Tucker Carlson and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon feature prominently on the front page behind banners of “misinformation” and “disinformation.”
Apparently, liberals don’t perpetuate misinformation.
The MDP attacked the “Republican Party, under the thrall of Donald Trump,” for supposedly threatening “[o]ur democracy” on its website. The PAC also makes no secret of its apparent hostility to far-left Democrats, noting on its website: “At the same time, some far-left organizations are attempting what they themselves call a ‘hostile takeover’ of the Democratic Party. That makes it more difficult for Democrats to win the swing seats that make a majority and weakens the party’s ability to govern.”
The MDP further described its purpose on its website: “Mainstream Democrats PAC was founded as the only Democratic group with the courage to consistently defend mainstream Democrats and defeat extreme candidates whose stated goal is ‘to overthrow’ the Democratic Party.”
Those “extreme candidates” are supported by another PAC opposed to MDP, the far-left Justice Democrats. Justice Democrats proudly calls on Democrats to “elect the next Ocasio-Cortez” on its website and supports other radical congressional lawmakers like Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN). Its platform is equally radical, with references to “LGBTQ+ equality,” the Green New Deal and abortion.
Another political advisor reportedly explained Hoffman’s dilemma with the far left to CNBC: “‘Reid and others are reacting to the fact that Democrats are ineffective. They’re killing moderates. What’s the alternative? You can’t go to the Republicans because they have these people who are completely off the wall.’” [Emphasis added].
