Biden Claims Roe Decision Makes Us an ‘Outlier Among Developed Nations,’ but That’s False – Opinion

Joe Biden in his furious post-Roe speech that America was now an “outlier” in the modern world due to our abortion laws. The problem is, that’s not true—or at least not in the way he meant it. While he clearly meant that our laws were way more restrictive than most countries, the only real way that we’re an outlier is that our laws are often looser.

Biden said Friday that he was speaking at the White House

The conservative majority on the Supreme Court has made this decision, demonstrating how outlandish it is and how disconnected they are from the vast majority. This decision made America an outlier in developed countries or the entire world. However, it should not be considered the last word.

According to Fox News though, European nations largely have abortion laws that are similar to those supported by Republican-led state governments.

Let’s look at some those countries: In Poland, abortion is only permitted in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger. Abortion procedures in Ireland and Germany are prohibited after 12 weeks. Italy is banned after 13 weeks. France, Austria, Spain and Spain ban abortion after 14 weeks.

Please note that it was the Mississippi case which the Court decided. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health OrganizationThis ban was effective after fifteen weeks. It’s not so different.

North Korea and Vietnam permit abortions beyond 20 weeks in China, North Korea, and Vietnam. Great, we want to be just like autocracies like North Korea and China which aren’t exactly known for valuing human life.

Fox, Per Fox

“Upholding laws restricting abortion on demand after 20 weeks would situate the United States closer to the international mainstream, instead of leaving it as an outlying country with ultra-permissive abortion policies,” the Charlotte Lozier Institute, a pro-life group, stated in 2014.

Poltifact writes:

The ruling by the (Supreme Court), eliminates the right of a woman to choose. This puts America at odds with all other developed countries, such as the six G-7 nations. Most have laws and court rulings that allow abortion access, but with some restrictions. The U.S. decision does not remove state laws that allow abortion.

We rate Biden’s statement Mostly True.

This analysis has a few problems. One, Politifact makes the “mostly true” statement AfterSharing a lengthy list of restrictions other countries place on their citizens, much like the one I just wrote. What makes us different? Second, and this is something that sets us apart from other European countries, it’s a federalist system. This means any power not listed in the constitution goes to the state. As PolitiFact notes, “the U.S. ruling does leave in place state laws that permit abortion.” In fact, states like California and New York are aiming to pass some of the most permissive abortion laws in the world. Maybe that’s where we’re an outlier.

Three: Leftists are always insisting that the United States should look more like Europe. We’re not Europe, and we don’t aspire to be. While there are some great things about it, we didn’t get to be the most powerful country in the world by emulating our friends on the Continent.

Biden, over his long career has been a sloppy rat on the issue of abortion. Yet, Biden (and others) seem determined to inflame their base after this landmark decision. They even appear to call for violence.

When Joe Biden calls us an outlier, he’s once again stretching the truth. Biden has always lived by the words of Mark Twain—”Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.”
