Two weeks ago we reported on how Rep. Cori Bush, a member of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s so-called “Squad” of House Democrat radicals, made clear in an interview with Axios that she was about to ramp up the rhetoric on defunding the police, this despite the fact that Democrats credit their embrace of the movement with losing 13 House seats in the 2020 elections.
“‘Defund the police’ is not the problem,” Bush told them, apparently unaware that every reputable poll taken on defunding the police shows diverse groups opposing the idea, including African-Americans, the Latino community, and Asian-Americans. “We dangled the carrot in front of people’s faces and said we can get it done and that Democrats deliver, when we haven’t totally delivered.”
Unfortunately for Joe Biden, Cori Bush isn’t the only “Squad” member who plans on continuing to give him nightmares ahead of the 2022 midterms.
At a time when rank and file Democrats are scrambling to contain the losses that are expected to take place in November, due in part to Biden’s disastrous “leadership” and the GOP playing it smart in the messaging wars by tying vulnerable members to the soft-on-crime far-left wing, it was announced Wednesday by the Working Families Party that Rep. Rashida Tlaib – an original to the “Squad” – would be taking the unusual step of giving a response to Biden’s upcoming State of the Union address:
The speech will put on display the deep rifts within the Democratic Party that have marked Biden’s presidency. Many Democrats want to unite against Republicans, despite their differences months before the difficult midterm elections. But the left sees an opportunity in this year’s primaries to elect a more liberal Democratic majority to Congress.
“No one fought harder for Build Back Better and a pro-democracy agenda than progressives,” Tlaib told POLITICO in a statement. “The work is unfinished and we’re not giving up on what our communities deserve. We need to get as much done for the people as we can this year, and elect a majority that can deliver for working families in 2023.”
[…]
According to her synopsis, Tlaib will call on Biden to exercise his executive power to cancel student loans and to change how poverty is calculated to increase benefits for more Americans. Her remarks will conclude with an appeal to citizens to take action in order to elect progressives across the country.
Though the speech won’t air on any of the major TV networks, it will be broadcast on the on the Working Families Party’s Facebook page, where GOP operatives will no doubt be combing for material to use in upcoming campaign ads.
AOC and the Working Families Party have an excellent working relationship. They both endorse her, and they also endorse her. them.
As I’ve said before, Republican strategists are no doubt celebrating the Squad’s plans to put themselves front and center going into the fall elections, because considering how it backfired on House Democrats in 2020 and also how things are looking for them as it stands now, them playing into the GOP’s hands by trying to once again make themselves the face of the Democratic party has the potential to make the number of Democrat seat losses expected in November not just bad but historic.
