Andrea Mitchell, MSNBC’s host reminded viewers on Thursday that any segment discussing Hillary Clinton was incomplete without mentioning the fact that she claimed Clinton is a victim to alleged “sexism.”
Huma Abedin, a long-time Clinton aide, appeared on the show to talk about her book. Mitchell only had to wait until the second question to bring up this topic. Mitchell suggested that Clinton was mistreated because she is a woman. That’s what you saw. Did we make any changes in how women are covered in politics?
Abedin, responding to her question, began recalling 2000’s Senate race in New York together with Rick Lazio, a former Republican Congressman.
This is one reason why I decided to tell the story in detail in my book. I discuss how we, women, didn’t expect anything less at the White House. The work was just what we needed. But in the 2000 Senate campaign, the first time I had witnessed what it was like — what women were up against in politics — in the debate that she had against the then-Republican congressman who marched over the debate stage to wave a piece of paper in her hand.
Without giving too many details, she complained about sexism during the presidential elections of 2008 and 2016 without providing any further information.
Then, Andrea, we didn’t know how to handle sexist remarks in 2008. It was a price that we were willing to accept. We laughed and joked about it. Then, 2016 brought all the external forces to impact that race. There was also a lot of sexist/sexism she had to face. It is hard.
Mitchell did not press Clinton on why she mishandled emails related to work and whether or not it violated federal law. Mitchell then asked about James Comey, the former director of the FBI, who announced in 2016 close to elections that the FBI was conducting an investigation into new emails found on Abedin’s computer.
Mitchell said: Mitchell: I’ll never forget it — that was 11-day trip to Iowa. Then you find out that Hillary Clinton sent emails. What do you think happened to her chances?

ANDREA MITCHELL You’ve certainly seen it. Are we making any improvements in how we represent women in politics and journalism?
HUMA ABEDIN LONGTIME HILLARY CLINTON AIDE : That’s why I wanted to write a book about it. It is how the White House treated us as women and we didn’t expect anything else. It was all about being grateful for the opportunity. But in the 2000 Senate campaign, the first time I had witnessed what it was like — what women were up against in politics — in the debate that she had against the then-Republican congressman who marched over the debate stage to wave a piece of paper in her hand.
Andrea said that we did not know how to respond to sexist comments in 2008! It was a price that we were willing to accept. We laughed and joked about it. Then, 2016 brought all the external forces to impact that race. There was also a lot more sexist and sexualism she had to face. It is hard.
MITCHELL Do you believe it affected her chances?
