During This Week’s “Powerhouse Roundtable” discussion on the soaring crime rates in major American cities and what should be done about it, there seemed to be agreement that the Democrats’ “defund the police” agenda is dead.
The anchor George Stephanopoulos turned then to Rachel Scott, ABC’s congressional correspondent and panelist. “you don’t hear defund the police too much on Capitol Hill, anymore?”
Scott answered confidently “No, not at all, actually”Apart from this, “handful of Progressives over in the House” that want to defund the police, there hasn’t been a peep from Democrat lawmakers about that wildly unpopular agenda.
She also observed that both President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have admitted defunding the police isn’t a message they even believe, and “Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has come out and said this is not our message. This is not what we’re campaigning on ahead of the midterms.”
Scott said that New York City is the worst place to be for leftists supporting defunding police. “Mayor [Eric] Adams just pointed out there was funding within that Build Back Better plan to actually help police officers.”
Fellow panelist Chris Christie wasn’t going to let Democrats get away with their past support or silence on this wildly unpopular message. He slammed Democrats for flipping the script and using mixed messages in typical Christie style.
George says that this problem is not one of funding. This is not a funding issue. It is a problem with policy. Liberal prosecutors are implementing these policies.
Scott was informed by Christie that many Democrats are refusing to defund the police force because of this reason. “they’re not saying it anymore because it’s not popular anymore. But when it was popular, I’m not saying Schumer or those guys were in favor, but they were silent. They were scared and they were silent to oppose the progressives.”
Leftist media helps Democrats to backtrack from unpopular agendas. MSNBC even admitted in July, after Eric Adams was elected Democratic Primary for New York City Mayor.

ABC’s This Week
4/17/2022
Eastern 9:52 a.m.GEORGE SEPHANOPOULOS: Rachel! You don’t hear too many people defunding the police on Capitol Hill anymore.
RACHEL SOTT: Actually, no. It’s possible to fund the police by defunding a small number of Progressives within the House. However, as we have heard from Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, it’s not something they believe. This is exactly what Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said. We aren’t campaigning for this issue ahead of the midterms. Mayor Adams pointed out that funding was available in the Build Back Better program to help officers.
CHRIS CHRISTIE : This isn’t a funding issue, George. This is not a funding issue. It is a problem with policy. This is a policy problem. These policies are supported by liberal prosecutors. They’re not saying it anymore because it’s not popular anymore. But when it was popular, I’m not saying Schumer or those guys were in favor, but they were silent. They were afraid and were unable to speak out against the progressives.
