‘A Huge Red Flag’: Chuck Todd Panics Over GOP Lead in NBC Midterm Poll

During the panel segment on NBC’s Meet the Press, host Chuck Todd openly panicked over the Republican Party’s lead in his network’s poll of the generic congressional ballot, calling it a “huge red flag”, and remarked how the GOP hasn’t led in NBC’s generic congressional ballot poll since September 2014.

Steve Hayes (Dispatch Editor) and panelist believed that there were two reasons why President Joe Biden, and the Democrat Party, are falling in polls. “we’re not seeing any improvement”The first is in the economy. “he’s [Biden] not willing to do the kind of things, I think, both with respect to the war and the economy that might actually help.”

Hayes claimed that Biden may come out for support of the an “all-in energy policy”, which in Hayes’s view would bring down gas prices. But as he pointed out, Biden could make the case for, but his left-wing base won’t let him.

Todd jumped on the bandwagon and spoke about one question in the NBC poll, which revealed that 38 percent blame Biden for the rise in inflation. Todd tried to give a positive spin about the President’s terrible statistics:

Susan thinks the best way to look at it is: only 38% blame President Biden. The majority of blames something else. However, that’s all you can really do. Interesting is the fact that only 6 percent blamed the Russian invasion in Ukraine. That was an exact statement by the President.

Susan Page from USA Today Washington was the chief correspondent. “Inflation was becoming a problem before Russia invaded Ukraine” These should be noted “three of the last four Presidents have lost control of the House of Representatives in their first midterm election.”

Todd then experienced a moment of profound shock when he discovered the most important result from the poll.

I’m going to put up our generic ballot test here. The public’s going to look at it, you’ll see 46-44, Republicans up by two, oh that’s not, that’s a coin flip. It’s the first time since september 2014 that Republicans have led in generic voting in polls. That was eight years ago. This is a place where there’s always a bit more democracy, as the Democrats have more seats in more of these areas. This is an alarming sign!

Yamiche Alcindor of NBC News Washington agreed reluctantly “it’s a huge red flag, and it’s coupled with the idea that people are blaming President Biden’s policies for inflation.” This is why voters trust Republicans to be more effective stewards and control Congress, she said. “That’s going to be a hard thing for Democrats to overcome and to message about”Alcindor was worried.

Todd finished the segment correct, noting correctly that gasoline prices and inflation are “a regressive tax. It impacts people harder farther down the socioeconomic ladder.”

NBC’s Meet The Press

STEVEN HAYES: One, there is no improvement in our economy; two, that he refuses to take the necessary steps to help both the economy and the war. It would be a comprehensive energy policy, which would eliminate some of the problems we are seeing in Russia, and could possibly reduce inflation. He might make the case, but his base won’t allow it.

CHUCK TODD (Talk): You mentioned the poll numbers for President Biden. Let me just say that you are blaming inflation on President Biden. Susan says that only 38 percent of people blame President Biden. The majority, however, blame some other person. But, it’s all they can do. It’s remarkable that six percent of those surveyed blame Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. This was something the President stated.

SUSAN PAGES: Inflation has been a problem since before Russia invaded Ukraine. However, it clearly caused an increase in gas prices as well as other problems. This is a serious concern for the White House. Three of the last four Presidents have lost control of the House of Representatives in their first midterm election and is there anybody in Washington who doesn’t think that’s gonna happen in November?

TODD: Well, it’s funny and Yamiche, I’m going to put up our generic ballot test here.

YAMICHE ALCONDER: That’s a big red flag. It is also coupled with the belief that Americans are blaming President Biden’s inflation policies. This is coupled with the fact that Americans still worry about the cost of other items, including gas. That’s why, if you ask them right now, they will essentially say that Republicans are their economic advisors. This will be an issue that Democrats need to address and overcome.

TODD: Yes, and that gas issue. It’s a progressive tax. People further down the socioeconomic ladder are more affected.
