Stephanopoulos Panics: Is There Anything Dems Can Do to Stop The GOP Wave?

On Sunday’s This WeekGeorge Stephanopoulos (an anchor) was well aware of the fact that Democrats could be eliminated at the midterm elections in 2022. He had witnessed the situation firsthand while working for the Clinton White House in 1994’s resounding defeat. So after having moved from overt Democratic operative for Democratic Party in the 1990s to covert Democratic operative for ABC, it’s no surprise to see him panicking as the elections get closer.

Turning to failed former Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp who was ousted from office in 2018, Stephanopoulos fretted “is there anything Democrats can do to stop the wave in ‘22?”

Referencing a previous panel discussion on the never ending January 6 hearings, Heitkamp thought it would be a brilliant idea to have her party obsess over the riots at the Capitol from over a year and a half ago instead of addressing real issues like inflation and gas prices: “is that every moment that we’re spending here talking about the January 6 commission we’re not talking about $5 gas, we’re not talking inflation.”

Having thought she meant Democrats should stop wasting time talking about Jan 6 and talk about pocketbook issues that Americans care about, Stephanopoulos jumped in to note “that’s not going to help Democrats, talking about $5 gas?”

Heitkamp agreed: “What I’m saying, you don’t want to be talking. You want the airwaves to be talking about this because it reminds the voters why they voted for Joe Biden.”

She failed to show why the voters care about the riot at US Capitol more than the high gas prices and the forty-year high inflation at their grocery stores. While everyone knows that Jan 6th was terrible, harping on the issue to gain political points, rather than explaining how inflation will be solved to voters, Stephanopoulos and Heitkamp are not likely to succeed. There’s a reason neither of them work in politics anymore.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Is there anything Democrats can do to stop the wave in ‘22?

HEIDI HEITKAMP : Right now I disagree with all of you on one point. We’re not discussing $5 gas and inflation every second that we spend here.

STEPHANOPOULOS

HEITKAMP: What I’m saying, you don’t want to be talking. This is why you want to talk on the airwaves about it. It reminds voters why they voted Joe Biden. We were facing a serious danger. I believe George was there about one year ago, when the poll showed that the President’s number had actually started going to the negative. So we asked him what he should do now. He wasn’t doing enough in that moment. This is just a play for the midterms. This isn’t going to make people change their minds. Many people believe that money can make a big difference. Remember that although I had lots of money, I did not get re-elected. And so at this point the cake’s baked on where you are. The only bright side is when you nominate people like Herschel Walker, when you nominate people like the Republican nominee in Pennsylvania it gives Democrats an opening they wouldn’t otherwise have.
