Randi Weingarten is the head of a school union. The Paper of Record attempts to change that record.
The New York Times’ use of Creative Writing to show the struggles they have with history is a sure indicator that our public schools are failing. The paper has delivered a bizarre profile that is glowing in its praise of national teachers’ union President Randi Weingarten as a champion for opening schools. After long periods in which parents were forced to keep their children at home by remote learning, this is a good thing.
Opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg attempts to put lipstick on the fecal matter in the yard, by selling the concept that Weingarten is to be praised for now pushing to open schools for the benefit of children’s emotional welfare. This framing suggests that the union leader is concerned about student welfare after putting them in educational purgatory for more than a year. This isn’t surprising. It’s not even remarkable that the attempt failed.
Goldberg attempts to balance two realities, but fails. While she recognizes that some children are suffering from problems because of closures to schools, Goldberg tries not to acknowledge it.
But those who fault Weingarten for closed schools misunderstand the role she’s played over the past 20 months. Rather than championing shutdowns, she’s spent much of her energy, both in public and behind the scenes, trying to get schools open.
It is difficult to write this with straight faces when Weingarten was vocally supporting school closings! Last summer she angrily called President TrYou can find us atmp’s call to bring kids back to school that fall “unconscionable.” When a growing tide of parents, state politicians, and some media outlets were pushing to bring kids back to schools, Weingarten resisted this sternly as she promoted the plan Teachers strikeYou can also respond.
The union Un plan d’action was publishedThese steps were to be completed before any openings are possible. These were not just for schools. They also addressed other areas of the community. – “Investment in public health and in our schools, universities, hospitals, and local and state governments. The recovery should prioritize strengthening the communities.”
Los Angeles teachers’ union (UTLA). Even further!, dictating that they would not reopen schools until demands were met, a list that included numerous non-education-related stipulations such as defunding of police, new wealth taxes on California’s wealthy residents, and nationwide Medicare-for-All. Weingarten was still defending the UTLA position this spring, suggesting that Jewish parents supported the pushBring your children back to school
Perhaps the biggest repudiation of Weingarten’s severe lockdowns was seen in the state of Florida, where governor Ron DeSantis defied the union’s desire to keep schools shuttered, opening classes back up in the fall of 2020. DeSantis, according to Weingarten’s smug allies in media, was the subject of hysteria. Students are being killedThese were completely crushed to dust. The school did not see any spikes of cases. But as I mentioned earlier in the year,A study showed that incident rates at Florida schools are lower than those in communities near them.
This was done well before vaccines were available and approved for use in school-aged children. That reality should have served as evidence that refuted the union’s position, but instead, in a fashion similar to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s sainthood, Weingarten maintains her status in the press as an authority over school management despite her disastrous record. The media is so out of touch that they have tried to portray Weingarten, a blatantly partisan but laughably ignorant attempt to recast her as an educational hero instead of the villainous educator she’s been for many years, with no success.
