Playmates of Year

Playboy Ends ‘Playmate of the Year’ to Promote ‘Diversity’

Playboy will end its 60-year tradition of selecting a “Playmate of the Year,” and will instead honor all 12 “Playmates of the Month” in a “more inclusive celebration.”

The news comes amid a series of changes for the iconic brand, which The New York Times described as becoming “a newer, woke-er, more inclusive Playboy.

Initiated by a millennial staff, the moves included removing ads, moving to a quarterly publication and, for a year-long period, the removal of most nude photographs.

“The point of this change was to not exclude anyone and instead of honoring one Playmate they’re honoring all 12 diverse Playmates of the year for each of their unique contributions to the brand,” Playboy said in a release on Tuesday announcing the change.

“They had an exceptional group of impressive diverse women join the Playboy family as Playmates for 2019. These women are accomplished advocates and admirable personalities in their own right. We wanted to raise the group up as a whole and felt that there was a need to commemorate each of them one more time.”

The 12 newly crowned Playmates of the Year will be featured in a 14-page spread in the magazine’s most recent issue, which is scheduled to appear March 17.

“This year, in lieu of its traditional Playmate of the Year award, Playboy made history once again by choosing to celebrate all 12 diverse Playmates of the month from 2019, for each of their unique contributions to the brand,” the magazine said.
