HBO Max’s new streaming comedy College Girls and their Sexual Lives Really wants us to know how woke and “virtuous” they are. The new record may be broken for most liberal names-dropping when they mention six of the world’s leading liberals in two shows that aired Thursday. Although Melania Trump was mentioned, it was not in a positive context. It is, obviously.
Mindy Kaling created the series. It follows four freshman girls who go to college together at Essex College, a fictional New England institution. The show is less graphic and extreme than some HBO shows about high schoolers, despite its title.
Wasting no time, the first liberal name is dropped near the beginning of episode 1, “Welcome to Essex,” as the dorm’s supervisor asks the students to share something they’re afraid of. One student answers, “I’m scared of my stalker. TikTok makes me a lot of money. Malia Obama follows me.” Of course, all the students gasp in surprise and awe.
They share the reasons why Essex was chosen by them over lunch. Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), drops second and third names while she discusses her future plans.
Kimberly, I will graduate summa and then I will go to a Tier One law school. Max and I then gonna move to DC, where we are going to be a powerful couple. Kamala [Harris]And [husband] Doug [Emhoff].
Bela (Amrit Kaur) desperately wants a position on the school’s comedy magazine, but she doesn’t get very far with the male editor who complains that they have enough females working on the publication already. While he attempts to cover his sexism, he claims he would like the fourth. Elizabeth WarrenWe were the president.
Leighton (Renee Rapp), is the meanest girl in the group. As Max and Kimberly take a walk, Max drops the fifth name, saying, “Well, Leighton is basically Melania, but the rest of them seem pretty nice.”
Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), is quite well-known in the group, as her mother is a powerful senator. Whitney has been dating her soccer coach Dalton (James Morosini), but suddenly discovers he’s married when she runs into him and his wife Michelle (Kim Matula) while out for a run. Michelle adds to the show’s woke vibe by bashing the NRA:
Michelle: Is this one of your player? Hi, I’m Michelle. I’m Dalton’s wife. It was so great to get to know you.
Whitney: Dalton.
Michelle: Michelle! Oh my God. Sorry, I don’t mean to be a stalker or anything but I love your mother. She gives the NRA her best shot–I just love it.
Whitney: Thanks, she’s great.
Max splits with Kimberly at the conclusion of the episode. It was obvious that Max had lost heart to Kimberly, and she also aspired towards the lowly goal “Kamala, Doug”. So Bela proposes a fun night out to cheer Whitney up, and she gives up the sixth name. Bela proclaims, “Look, we don’t have power over when guys treat us like shit. However, we have control over how we allow it to affect us.. Ich denke Hillary Clinton said that.”
Episode 2, “Naked Party,” was half as long as the first, but the writers still found a way to name drop and virtue signal at the same time less than ten minutes into the episode. The students from French class discuss their summer experiences. A girl in French Class proudly declares she was an intern for an environmental activist. “Nancy Pelosi called our ideas, ‘revolutionary,’ and she even tweeted a picture with us,” she says smiling ear-to-ear, barely able to contain her excitement.
Phew! That’s certainly enough liberals for one night! It’s hard to believe that the writers managed to get all of their virtue signaling from their system in order to keep the remainder of the season political-free. Time will reveal.
