At Houston’s Rice University, they’re trying to slay slavery.
Through the statue of William Rice, the evil institution has been suspended as a cloud over the school.
Purportedly, William once possessed slaves — 15, in fact.
That’s not wholly surprising for a prominent man of his era. Many universities don’t have the reputation of being named for the poor.
Amid our effort to sweep away 19th-century notables, a Change.org campaign was launched to remove “Willie’s Statue.”
Online description
By leaving Rice’s statue in the center of the quad and using his imagery in PR, Rice continues to immortalize a racist enslaver…
Two students designed the “Down With Willy” digital flyer, which includes the following links:
Taken from Item 3:
We demand…
- Rice invested in the creation of a Black House non-residential, that offers all the benefits of a residential college and allows Black students to meet and organize.
- Rice Wellbeing and Counseling Center hires more Black counselors and psychotherapists. Also, all counselors/therapists need to be taught how to deal with racial and ethnic trauma.
- Rice severed all ties to [the Houston Police Department]Reduce and increase [Rice University Police Department]The goal is to eliminate all forms of slavery from campus.
- Rice University created and implemented a compulsory class on systemic racism in order to educate incoming students about how this affects Black people.
- If a Black student asks to be accompanied by a Black person, it will be granted.
- the comprehensive decolonization of Rice’s entire curriculum.
There’s work to be done.
To return to William Rice: It is logical that the college be named after him. This man left his fortune for the institution’s foundation.
Nonetheless, his effigy’s being bounced.
A statement by the Office of President
The Board of Trustees embraced the recommendations (of the Task Force on Slavery, Segregation and Racial Injustice)… The Founder’s Memorial will be placed in a new location within the Academic Quadrangle…
Better?
What’s the ultimate effect when William’s name remains on all school material? How does one say, “We’ve radically rid ourselves of Mr. Rice…at Rice University”?
The college is said to be racist.
Gabrielle Falcon is the petition author. She discovered that in 1960s, black students were attending schools run by whites.
[T]he money that was used to found Rice University came from wealth earned by Rice’s cotton trading. What is not told is that he served on a slave patrol (aka a slave catcher).”
Only 56 (!!!) were available in 1964. Raymond Johnson, a Ph.D. candidate from Black was the first Black student admitted to Rice University in 1964. Rice University used to be tuition-free. However, many may not know this. Rice University allowed Black students into its university to break its racist charter.
William Rice, if it makes you feel better William Rice is dead.
He was actually killed while asleep in 1900. This crime was the catalyst for the establishment of the university.
The college also became a scene of crime.
How’sThisWhat should be done?
Meanwhile, the school’s mascot is an owl.
Perhaps there’s even more racial reckoning to go. After all, animals are not angels.

In the meantime, William Rice’s college still exists, it’s still called Rice University, and his statue remains on the campus. It’s simply been taken from its old spot.
Maybe they should just start over — and name the college something not nearly so white as “Rice.”
