Kids Can Join the Transgender ‘Trend’ by Secretly Buying $40 Hormones on the Internet

“There are young transgender ‘celebrities‘ with hundreds of thousands of followers.”

Children in the United Kingdom who identify as a gender different than their biological sex are able to purchase hormones to transition online ― easily, cheaply and without regulation, an investigation by the Daily Mail found.

Easy: The Mail was prompted to conduct the inquiry after a mother told the paper about her teenage son who was able to have female growth hormones secretly delivered to him. The mother only noticed something had happened after the boy began developing a pair of breasts. According to the Mail, he was able to pick up the drugs from the post office using his own ID.

Cheap: With just minutes of online search, the Mail discovered a wide array of DIY sex-transition kits for very low prices and no age checks. One pack of male growth blockers that promised “breast growth” cost as little as £34 ($44). For women transitioning to men, a product that guaranteed male traits, including a lower voice, was sold for a similar price.

No regulation: The Mail posted for sale a variety medications associated with sex transitions, saying “no questions asked.” They faced no regulative retribution.

Stephanie Davies-Arai, a parenting adviser, advocated in the article ― published in November and updated last month― for more parental control over children who consider a transition. She said that the availability of sex-change products is leading more children in Britain to make the irreversible transition. This is exacerbated by the normalization of transgenderism, she said, describing something like a youth fad.

“In my experience, it can start with a teenager going on to websites like Tumblr or Reddit, where they are convinced in linked chat rooms by total strangers that they must be transgender, even if what they are feeling might be little more than normal teenage angst,” she told the Mail. “There are young transgender ‘celebrities‘ with hundreds of thousands of followers on internet sites where youngsters are encouraged to want to change sex and then told how to go about it.”

Davies-Arai, who founded the advisory group Transgender Trend put some of the blame on Britain’s sluggish universal healthcare system, which covers sex transitions, but has been overwhelmed by an ever-growing backlog of transgender applicants waiting to begin the change.

The long waiting periods, which can extend long over a year, are pushing teens to search for alternative methods.

“Children don’t want to wait so they turn to the internet. Some even do so with the help of their parents who believe they should not challenge their boy or girl if they want to change gender,” she said. “Parents who do object are called transphobic and face a society that cheers their children on because it’s now ‘cool’ to be ‘trans.'”

Such concerns are newly relevant in the United States, where emboldened Democrats are promising to advance legislation that would guarantee special rights from transgender people.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York announced on Monday that she will promote legislation to protect transgender soldiers, as well as bring a trans Navy lieutenant commander to the State of the Union address. She said the bill was a response to President Donald Trump’s “cruel” ban on trans service members, which was revived last month by the Supreme Court.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently said she will use her new Democratic majority to advance the Equality Act, a bill that would codify protections against LGBT discrimination, including special guarantees for trans people to be regarded in federal spaces according to their self-identified gender rather than their biological sex.

However, not everyone has gotten on board. A number of “trans-exclusionary radical feminists,” as they are derogatorily called on the left, last week sought to block the Equality Act by aligning with conservatives and in one case ambushing a transgender woman who was advocating for the bill on Capitol Hill.
