The Marshall Fire Blazes Quickly Through Boulder County, Colo., Destroying 600 Homes in Its Wake – Opinion

This is a terrible way for a year to begin. Wind gusts reaching 105 miles an hour set the grass on fire. These are the main causes of Colorado’s current disaster.

Tens of thousands were forced from their homes by wildfires, and anxiously waited for Friday’s news. The flames had destroyed 580 houses and one hotel.

The blazes which erupted near Denver’s downtown area on Thursday morning left at least one person dead and six others injured. This was unusually late in 2014, after a dry autumn and midst a snowless winter.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle, who gave the early damage estimate, said there could be more injuries — and also deaths — because of the intensity of the fires, propelled by winds that gusted up to 105 mph (169 kph).

“This is the kind of fire we can’t fight head-on,” Pelle said. “We actually had deputy sheriffs and firefighters in areas that had to pull out because they just got overrun.”

In three counties, Boulder, Superior, or Louisville, the Marshall Fire has destroyed over 600 properties. As they evaluate the damage, this number could increase. Gov. Yesterday Jared Polis declared an emergency, which allows the state to use disaster funds to help with the response effort.

The Denver PostThe local authorities lifted evacuation warnings and pre-evacuation orders for Boulder County residents, Broomfield and Westminster as the winds subsided.

The blazes that lit up the night sky had died down by Friday morning, leaving behind smoldering houses and burned trees, fields, and forests. Light snow had been forecasted, which raised hopes that it would prevent any flare-ups.

Louisville and Superior are located 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Denver. These towns, home to over 34,000 people each, were evacuated in advance of the flames that cast an orange-smoky haze across the land.

These two communities are home to middle- and upper-middle class subdivisions, as well as shopping centers and parks. It is located between Denver, Boulder and Boulder. This region also houses the University of Colorado.

California’s causation is very similar to California’s: dry winters and circumstances. California’s circumstance centers around homelessness and negligent fire mitigation. Colorado’s misfortune was winds that downed power lines after experiencing an unseasonably dry fall and winter. Denver’s very first snowfall of the season was on December 10. Despite the simplicity of this math, climate change is always invoked. The AP proved it.

Authorities said that some of the blazes were caused by fallen power lines.

Climate change, according to scientists, is making the weather extremer and wildfires more destructive.

Ninety percent of Boulder County is in severe or extreme drought, and it hasn’t seen substantial rainfall since mid-summer.

“With any snow on the ground, this absolutely would not have happened in the way that it did,” said snow hydrologist Keith Musselman.
