Shirtless Maroon 5 Singer at Super Bowl Halftime Show Sparks Cries of ‘Sexist’ Double Standard

“This country should have a serious chat about why Adam Levine’s nipples are, uh, apparently ‘acceptable.'”

Liberal commenters complained about a sexist double-standard, citing Super Bowl XXXVII’s “Nipplegate” controversy involving Janet Jackson, after Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine removed his shirt during the halftime show at Super Bowl LIII.

It’s been fifteen years since Jackson and ‘NSYNC’s Justin Timberlake caused a national scandal during the halftime show of a Super Bowl contest between the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots. The two pop icons’ performance of “Rock Your Body” was capped off by Timberlake removing part of Jackson’s outfit and revealing her right breast, which happened to be encased in a nipple shield of some sort.

During Sunday’s halftime show, viewers were reminded of the infamous Jackson-Timberlake moment when Maroon 5’s lead singer took off his top.

And many took issue with an alleged double-standard regarding male versus female toplessness.

“This country should have a serious chat about why Adam Levine’s nipples are, uh, apparently ‘acceptable’ on TV but Janet Jackson was shamed and blacklisted for something she didn’t even do,” tweeted Human Rights Campaign communications director Charlotte Clymer.

“Why is it okay to see Adam Levine’a boobs and not Janet Jackson’s?” comedian Aisha Tyler wrote in a tweet. Meanwhile, ESPN’s Katie Nolan averred that “Super Bowl halftime nipple rules feel inconsistent.”

But it wasn’t just the purported sexism of the Super Bowl halftime show that earned the ire of the wokest members of the Twitterati. The Atlantic staff writer Jemele Hill, a frequent and outspoken critic of racism, viewed the halftime show through a social justice prism.

“If gentrification, were a Super Bowl halftime show,” she tweeted.
