ABC News Host Assumes Black Panelist Is a Democrat — Gets Embarrassingly Corrected

ABC “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos introduced a panelist as a Democrat and was immediately corrected in embarrassing style.

“Democrat Roland Martin from ‘Roland Martin Unfiltered,'” Stephanopoulos said, referring to the Haitian-American journalist’s YouTube show.

However, Martin, looking confused, interjected, “I’m not a Democrat.”

“You’re not a Democrat?” Stephanopoulos asked.

“No. I’m a regular brother,” Martin said, drawing laughter from the panel.

The other panelists were ABC News correspondent Terry Moran, The Dispatch editor-in-chief Jonah Goldberg and Republican strategist Alice Stewart.

Martin later retweeted praise for his correction of Stephanopoulos.

A former CNN contributor, Martin has generally staked out liberal positions on behalf of African Americans. He has often criticized Republicans and conservative media.

However, he has also defended black Republicans from allegations that they are “Uncle Toms” and accused Democrats of treating black people like “side pieces” or “political sharecroppers.”

Roland Martin and the impeachment trial

During Sunday’s panel discussion, Martin argued that Senate Republicans would never vote to remove Trump from office in the ongoing impeachment trial “because they are deathly afraid of this man.”

The third presidential impeachment trial in U.S. history is unlikely to end with a vote that removes Trump from office, as Republicans who control the Senate have continually voiced support for the president.

However, it is certain to cast a shadow over the November 2020 presidential election, even though ratings for the first two days indicate only a fraction of the more than 130 million Americans expected to cast ballots will have watched the first days of the proceedings.

Trump was impeached by the Democratic-led House of Representatives in December on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress for pressuring Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading Democratic political rival, and impeding the inquiry into the matter.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing.

For Stephanopoulos, the botched introduction of Martin was his second on-air gaffe in recent days.

On Thursday, the camera cut to him making a “slit-the-throat” motion as Trump’s personal attorney outlined the president’s impeachment defense. Stephanopoulos appeared momentarily embarrassed to have been caught.

Critics suggested the former Democratic operative didn’t want viewers to hear Jay Sekulow’s argument.

Newsbuster executive editor Tim Graham tweeted: “These guys are NOT going to like hearing the Trump side of this trial.”
